Subject: Who will buy Dodge again
IP: Logged

Message:
Now that the takeover of Chrysler is complete and the Chrysler name will disappear from DaimlerChrysler AG (2004-2005), is anyone here going to remain loyal to Dodge?

My thinking is that when my 01 CC and my 02 Caravan are toast, I'm going to either GM or Ford, most likely GM because I really like the TrailBlazers and their Vortec4200's.

If I wanted a foreign manufacturer, I'd prolly buy a Toyota. There's just too much Mercedes creeping into DC's lineup. The GenII Neons are a Mercedes design, the 4.7 in our Daks is a Mercedes design, the 5 speeds behind them are a Mercedes design, the replacement for the LH's is a Mercedes design using Mercedes engine and drivetrain, the replacement for the Caravan will prolly be that ugly fukcing three story Mercedes van...the list goes on. Who knows what the next Dakota will be. Some Nazi wetdream, no doubt.

I don't want German cars from a German manufacturer. Period.

Anyone else agree.

I'm assuming you're just anti-foreign, because noone in their right mind could be against Mercedes-Benz or BMW's craftsmanship. Anyway, China's the main Nazi's now.

I'd be willing to bet the Germans and Japanese build the best cars in the world, always have, always will. A Benz is just a German Acura.

Hell, after all those Dodge-lemon years, I'm glad Mercedes had something to do with my Dodge, the 4.7 happens to have one of the stoutest bottom ends out there, and noone can argue against it's economy. It's more than a liter smaller and is already built in the HO version surpassing the 360. I wonder if that has something to do with good engineering.

I'm not saying that Germans are the only good engineers, they're just the only ones building cars. Except for some Chevy stuff, and you can't argue with that if you have any sort of education. I'm positive it has a great deal to do with the GM payscale. You can't argue with it, where I'm from there's a freakin GM headlight assembly plant that's easy work and folks are starting out at almost $15/hr!!!! That is the place to work in Monroe, LA. BMW is similar in that their facility in Dolpfinker (bad spelling) Germany is one of the best in the world, it's practically it's own city. I'm sure Mercedes is the same way. They just happen to be in a different country. Get over it or change it.

I'm holding out for the new Nissan Titon or the

of driving a Jap truck, but think having
something as reliable as an appliance would
be great. (At least for me).

Five Dodge's total, and my last 3 in a row. From what I here from my Chevy, Ford, and foreign buddies, I think I'll stick with Mopar. Yes, Dodge has some issues/ problems, but they don't compare to the others, in my opinion. As far as build quality/ strength, there is no comparison. Look at the frame, axles, sheetmetal, etc. on the other brands and you will see. You can bend the fender and the bedside on a Silverado with your hands and not much effort. Try that on your Dodge.

Soon as we pay off our new truck we plan on picking up another dodge. Probably the Stratus R/T. My fiance really loves those things.

Nothing bad can come from a company like Mercedes or BMW, except prices might go up a bit. ;)

I've been a Dodge owner going on 21 years and I've owned 11 different Dodges and currently own 2. Quite honestly, Chryslers reputation for making nice looking but poorly built cars in the 80's and 90's was well deserved. Except for the K Car. My Aries was a tank but butt fuggly. Maybe having some different engineering philosophies while maintaining the core values of the division is a good thing. The 4.7 is testiment to that.

As for buying GM or Ford, I'd rather lick my own scrotum. As for "foreign" content, get used to it. There's really no such thing as American or Japanese or Korean ownership. GM owns a huge chunk of Toyota, has strategic parterships with Suzuki, DC owns a huge chunk of Hyundai, Hyundai owns KIA, DC has a huge chunk of Mitsubishi, Ford is in bed with Mazda, Ford owns Jaguar, Land Rover, GM owns SAAB, yatta yatta yatta. You need a program to keep track of it all. It's called "globalization". Learn to love it, it's here to stay.

You need to check your facts Mr.H. While it is true that the German cars are great handling cars and fit and finish is outstanding, they only have average repair records at best. Lately, some of the fit and finish issues have even been suspect, especially on Mercedes. Acura, Lexus, and even Toyota and Honda will be MUCH more reliable cars. You buy a BMW or a Mercedes for one of two reasons: 1. Performance driving 2. A status symbol. A fairly high percentage are sold with slushboxes, so we can assume most are sold for status. Do you know the difference between a porcupine and a BMW? The porcupine has the pricks on the outside. Will I buy another Dodge? Probably. I have owned all three American brand trucks and like the Dodge the best.

Guess I'm a prick then, huh, cuz I have one.
Actually, there isn't a 4 door american car built that will perform as well as my BMW 535i, not braking, not handling, not acceleration, not comfort, and just RECENTLY have the Japs caught up with technology that BMW implemented 13 YEARS AGO. 4 wheel anti-lock disc brakes that are amazing to say the least and a factory LSD that's better described as posi-trac, body panels and interior trim pieces that actually fit just as well after you've removed them and put them back on a few times, and a straight six that's smoother than your girlfriend's A_SS, and that's pretty smooth. A BMW 330i still manages to run as quick as a G-35 with 46 fewer lbs. of tq. and 35 less hp. and still remains one of the sexiest cars built. I'll have to agree that they are probably being repaired more often, but you'll have to give that to the majority of the owners not maintaining them properly.

Tell me how long racing engines hold up as compared to passenger car engines and I'll tell you why you THINK they are being repaired more. Check consumer reports on a 90' 535i, maybe they've change since, but they used to build a $45,000 car. As a matter of fact, I love beating mustangs on the interstate with a 6, and any car that's 13 years old and still makes the power it's supposed to has got to be built right.

AVERAGE REPAIR RECORDS????

My car has only needed a water pump and a blower motor. Check your facts.

Bill, I thought the same thing when I heard the New Nissan had a Dana 44 rear, My jeep GRand has a dana 44 and it is a lightweight... I can imagine the pain on owners faces when they overlaod thier truck (and honestly who doesn't every once in a while) and break an axle at the side of the road leaving home depot or something... I mean who in thier right japanese minds would do something this un-american... Oh wait that's right, toyota goofed as well on their first "fullsize" coming to the states with a big truck and only a V6. Give the nissan 3-4 years to learn and then they will have another midsize truck to compete with ours..

But I will stick with Mopar thank you very much... At least should something go wrong (and something will on any vehicle eventually) I will have the space to fix it without dismantling the whole damn thing!!!!!!!!

I'd buy Dodge again so long as the quality is
there. Then again, I'll buy whatever domestic
manufacturer has the best quality and deal I
can get. Dodge has won that competition for
the last 3 trucks I've owned (and my wife's
Liberty).

I'd love to get a BMW 3 series though. Those
things are awesome.

Dodge has come a long way in quality in the past 4 years, and they will soon be one of the best in the business (at least by the predictions). They're already close as it is.

Initially, I was hesitant to reply to this post but recent news articles have raised my disposition. I come from a long line of Mopar owners, my parents, my grandparents, my brother, and both sets of my wife’s divorced parents. Time will tell if the revival started in the 1990’s continues when the current models are replaced. The American auto market is a different place than Europe. We as a nation now buy more trucks than cars, affordability, familiarity, and ease of maintenance may be contributing factors. Germans have proven to be difficult to deal with in a business environment, they don’t have to get along with you, you have to get along with them and they can only see their viewpoint on a topic. You will not get to pull an A class blunder here and recover from it, it places you in the ranks of vega, citation, and yugo vehicles. Wolfgang, retro styling is not dead before it began, look at any TV add for products other tan cars sold here, the classics help make the sale. This is what your competitors will use to lure potential buyers into their showrooms and sell more cars than you. It is easy to update vehicles like the P.T. Cruiser, follow the aftermarket trends, add a 2 door, a panel, a convertible, or even an all wheel drive model, and put some chrome bumpers back on something! Just don’t install a B series van grill on the European family truckster and call it a Dodge. I am concerned about recent styling and powertrain changes in the post Lutz sellout. If I wanted a Mercedes I would have bought one. I don’t want 50 colors of metallic grey, blue, brown that seem to be popular. The concepts for the next wave of new cars remind me of the 1962 lineup, great engineering but hard to look at, the kinds of vehicles that lined the driveways of senior citizens. I don’t want an AMG Mercedes, that styling is similar to tying a pork chop to the neighbor’s kid to get the dog to play with him. The last thing that I find curios is the recent trend to sell to the under 25 market, I was there once and it was as close to broke as I have ever been. Accessories may be a good choice but even 20K is tough on a college budget. If Chrysler Daimler (you guys need to learn to alphabetize) is serious about returning to profit it would be a good idea to produce a fleet police/taxi car that could carry your sales when the retail market hits low points. Sometime you can’t see the forest for the trees.

My first car was a K car previously stated. It was a 86 Chrysler Lebaron Turbo 2.2L.. And let me tell you that thing when I bought it I was told it had 86000 miles on it, but when I traded in on the Dakota I have now I was told it actually had +100000 miles than I knew and quite frankly it drove like it was still new. I was a mini Nascar, that thing would flat out fly! The rear kind of sagged other than that I love it!
I currently have a 00 Dakota and will always have a Dodge, I love it. I am constantly fighting off the urge to trade the one i have in on a 03 Quad for the extra room!

I agree sandman, those are my biggest complaints. The paint on my first Dakota, a 97, looked as though it had been applied during a sandstorm and the paint on my second one, an 01, scratches so damn easily. The brakes function but are just enough and the NVH can be annoying at highway speeds.

Good call.
