Subject: getting rid of rust... IP: Logged
Message: hey,
I just bought a '93 Dakota. Overall it's in pretty good shape, but there's a few chips in the paint, some of which are starting to rust. I'd like to get rid of this before it gets very bad. I don't have the money at the moment to have a body shop paint the truck... is there a good way to get rid of the rust without spending much? You can get spray cans of paint at wal-mart that are matched to most vehicle colors... I used the stuff to paint some parts of my old truck after a wreck... it's not the best stuff in the world, but could be sanded off if I wanted to have a professional paint job done later, and it's just a couple of spots that'd have to be done... does anyone have a better suggestion, or is this a bad way to go?

Message: I have elimindated several rust spots on my Dakota. The process is not time consuming, either. First, you must use a hard scouring pad of some time to sand off as much affected area as you can. I have even taken a screwdriver and chipped away at it to get as deep as I could. All affected areas MUST be chipped away. You must get down as far as you can, to the bare steel areas.
After you have taken all that off, kill it with some rust stop and let it sit for a period of time as recommended on the bottle. The best rust stop out there is the gel type that you brush on quite heavily and let it dry. Overnight, if necessary. This will turn the steel black and any remaining traces of rust black too, totally killing whatever remains. Then, spray it with primer, usually a gray or black color. Let that sit for whatever time is recommended. If damage like dents or holes have been caused due to the rust, you can now fill those in with a Bondo material. Then, after all that is done, you are now ready to paint the area.
The most important thing to remember through all of this process is to get as much original rust REMOVED from the affected area, exposing the original steel. Use a screwdriver to chip away and get underneath all that rust. All of it must go. Then follow the outlined details above.
I have done this several times with excellent results!
