Subject: Newby needs help deciding on this Dak?

Hi,
Am almost ready to close deal on 1997 Dakota SLT 4x4 V8 extended cab.
95000 miles
pwr door/windows, Cruise, AC,CD player
Black,with silver accents.
Has one of those bed covers with snaps

I am sort of concerned regarding the mileage.

Want to make sure I can get an mechanic inspect it. Is it possible to make an assessment on the state of the transmission easily?

Only issue is that I am an hour away from the dealer. Is it reasonable to pay for the vehicle with it in writing that I can bring it back if the local mechanic says that the truck has problems?

Am very new to this and just want some insight to make sure I am not making a mistake. Or have not looked hard enough.

-From a dealer
-very Clean condition
-They are putting on new tires, turning rotors, installing new shift lever, and fixing problem with door lock.
-$8400 cash

Edmunds True Market Value says $9610 from dealer $7775 from pvt sale
Black Book says $10,900 from dealer

For comparison, I have seen a 96 4x4 V8 ext cab slt with 64k miles on it from a dealer asking $8995. But the interior was sort of beat up.

and seen a pvt party sale of 122k V6 4x4 ext cab asking $6300.
But most 97s from dealers have been listed at $9 and $10k.

Anyway, just based upon some of the online pricing it seems like I am getting a fair deal.

But this is a big investment for me, and can use some of ya'll's insight.

Thanks much

Bite the bullet and take that money and use it as a down payment on a new one you'll be much happier.they got a $3000 rebate right now you'll be able to get exactly what you want with a small payment.

8500 for a car with 95000 miles, i wouldn't. The mileage alone is too much.

Damn Jersey boy, that's a nice truck! If I was to describe what I want my next Dak to look like, it's that exactly. I'm preparing to go from the ext cab to the Quad. How much lift and what size tires you got on that?

Still undecided.
A new truck, even with the $3k rebate is still significantly more than what I have to spend. And a car payment is not something I can deal with at the moment.

Originally, I was just going to get a beater truck $2-3k, this has grown into getting some sort of extended cab so that that the entire family can fit in it so we can take the bikes/trailer places. This has grown in to getting a 4x4 to appease my manhood. So it just keeps getting more and more, but I don't think a new truck is possible.

Right now I am in the dilema of paying more for a V8 4x4 when I really only need a basic 2wd V6 extended cab for my purposes. Practicality vs wanting to get a cool looking ride. Combined with being not the most knowledgeable about vehicles and hoping to not get a POS

Get the V8 4x4, otherwise you'll beat yourself over the head later.

Trust me, I am.

When Craig said
"8500 for a car with 95000 miles, i wouldn't. The mileage alone is too much."

What is that decision based upon. Just personal opinion. The only tools I have available to judge pricing are online at Kelly, Black Book, NADA, and Edmunds. Edmunds by far shows the lowest values becaues they say it is based upon actual prices people are paying and not what dealers are listing like KBB.

Based upon Edmunds, even with the 95k, the price I could get the truck for is below what they are saying its dealer True Market value is. ($9493) So according to them I am not getting ripped off.

Bottom line is that if I want this truck I need to take it to a mechanic and have them check to make sure I am not just letting the good looks of the truck make my decision.

You tell the seller you want to have a mechanic of your choice check it over before ANY deals are even talked about.

If he says no he may be trying to hide something and tell him your not interested.
