Subject: replace upper ball joint, need alignment

Ok here's the deal...

My front end has made a pop crunch noise when turning over uneven pavement for some time now.
SouthTown Dodge could not find the problem in 36000 miles and now another dealer found the upper ball joint being bad at 40K.
My extended warranty covers the Ball Joint but they are saying if I want it aligned that is gonan be another $39.95 because the service procedure to replace ball joints does not include an alignment.

Is it normal procedure for Dodge to install factory replacement ball joints without correcting the alignment?

I would think if the joint is worn enough to fail it would be out of alignment and a new joint would not correct the alignment.

Please answer quickly as my truck is at the dealership now and I am stacking up my argument.

I have had nothing but problems with Dodge Dealerships/ sales and service so i expect this to be a battle nonetheless.

Yes, you will need an alignment. Whenever you take the front end apart you have to get it aligned. Just putting a new ball joint on will not align the truck.

When Dodge replaces the ball joints they
actually replace the entire a-arm.

That said, I replaced the two upper ball joints
on my Quad with Moog pieces over a year ago
and didn't have it re-aligned. I haven't had a
problem. Keep in mind I didn't remove the
a-arms, just replaced the ball joints.

They should be able to replace the upper
a-arms without screwing up the alignment. I'd
tell them to keep the alignment and see what
you get. My experience is dealers do a _hitty
job at alignments anyway. I'd go to a good
suspension/alignment shop.

My 2¢.

I also did my balljoints a few months ago, and used the MOOG replacements. You are supposed to align the front end when doing any suspension or steering work. I just got the alignment done and there were only 2 of 6 adjustments out of spec, but the alignment definetly made my truck run straighter.

On the point of whether or not the alignment is covered, this is warranty work, and therefore the parts and labor are covered by the manufacturer. Don't let up until it's all covered by them. They should be on the hook for all of the work and charges.
