Subject: Where is my fuel filter?95 dakota V6 IP: Logged
Message: Hi! I am in an isolated location on a mountain and the few people that are here cannot help too much on my truck. After getting a tank of gas my truck started to sound "dirty", when I got off at the freeway exit it stalled, but started right back up again. When I made my way up the mountain it was BEYOND slow going up hills but went down them just fine. It then stalled just as I got to where I was going to park! When it stalls the brakes don't work - I am hoping that it is just my fuel filter! I would like to try to change out my fuel filter before making the hour trip to town where the nearest mechanic is. Can anyone help me? I would really appreciate it!

Message: Bad news. It's inside your fuel tank. You either need to drop the tank to change it, or remove the bed. Good luck!

Message: Try a bottle or 2 of Dry Gas or Gas/Water remover, that happens alot and it can be a real cheap easy fix, hopefully for you.
Good luck.

Message: Thank you! I will try the dry gas. I was kind of hoping that it would be easier to get to than INSIDE the damn fuel tank! At least now I know why I couldn't find it. I appreciate the help. And thank you for the luck - I need it!!

Message: My filter is where Superbee's is, but I can offer you some advice that will make dropping a full tank easier.
I had my fuel pump go out with (of course) a full tank.
Forget siphoning the old gas out. There is a check ball in the way.
I only jacked up the drivers side of the truck. This gave me the most room to see and work with.
The tank is held in place at 4 points of varying effectiveness. 2 tank straps, the wires and hoses leading to the pump and the filler neck. Don't forget to disconnect the filler neck.
To support a 200 lb fuel tank use 2x4's set in an H shape. Be careful not to injure the fuel pump which is in the center of the tank. The vertical arms of the "H" will support the tank on each side of the pump. When the tank is supported, you can slowly lower the tank. Make sure all wires have been disconnected.
The pump unscrews quite easily. After I had the tank open, I siphoned the gas out into containers which made it easier to lift the tank back into position.
After you drive a bit, retighten the straps. The tank will shift and the straps will become loose. I got nervous with my fuel tank wiggleing about.
Good Luck!

Message: Even easier than that is to disconnect the fuel line at the rail, put a long pice of hose over the fuel line fitting (that is big enough to go over the fitting,I forget the actual size, its been a while) and clamp it down tight, take the loose end of the hose and put it in a bucket and turn the key to ON while someone makes sure the hose stays put.
You'll empty a tank in a few short minutes!!

Message: One thing about dropping a tank, even on a year or so old truck-- typically the straps are on for good-- you'll most likely have to cut then replace the straps. Removing the bed is a 15 min job-- and you don't have to mess with dumping the fuel from the tank.

Message: i have a 91 dak 4 cyl 5 spd. anyways i believe that the previous owner put the wrong type of fuel filter on my truck. the filter is on the side of the bed on the line its not in the tank like some are apparently. my question is does anyone know what kind, if any special kind, of filter is needed for my truck?
