Message: Just got through reading some info on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. Looks like they have gotten quite a few problems with 2000 Dakotas brakes. Looks like the front rotors are warping very easy and early and often, even after being replaced under warranty. Their site is nhtsa.dot.gov If your click on the problems and issues under the car safety section you can go through it and get a list of the problems.

Message: Me too!!! My 2000 Dakota SLT 4X4 CC experienced vibration in the front brakes at 12,000 miles. Haven't taken it to the dealer yet. Is there a factory fix?

Message: I have a 1999 dakota, I have new rotor but are unable to remove the old ones. The manual indicates that the rotor just slip on and the ones I purchased are the same. The manual show a clip on one of the stud but I have had the rotors replaced by the dealership 3 times. Does anyone have a sugguestion.

Message: Dave...just buy some decent after market ones. They aren't that expensive. Have the dealership put them on so the don't put on oem ones again. You don't have to get fancy the slotted rotors.

Message: My 2000 warped a set of Raybestos rotors. I had the Raybestos Quiet Stop pads on there. They are OK when cool, but get pretty bad when warmed up in stop and go traffic. I'm trying a set of Powerslots once the weather cooperates with me.
See http://www.fast4x4.net/brake.htm on how to replace our brakes.

Message: It is a known problem. I work for a company that supplies parts to DaimlerChrysler and travel to their plants several times a year. I have talked to some Quality people at DC and they indicated that the 2000 rotors were cast from poor quality material from their vendor. Problem fixed late in 2000.
I also had the 2000 Dakota QC and went thru 3 sets of rotors by 12k. I had to put on aftermarkets to solve problem.

Message: I have the aftermaket Powerslot rotors and experienced the same problems with them. I'm on my third set with 32K miles on my 00 4x4. I think there is some kind of problem with the rear drums not adjusting properly. This would account for the rapidly warping rotors because the majority of the weight of the truck would be stopped by the front brakes only. After I had Good Year adjust the drums, my brakes worked a lot better for about 500 miles. Does anybody have problems with their brakes that has 4 wheel discs? I'm thinking of doing a disc brake conversion but was wondering if the problem would persist.

Message: Diagnostic lights are supposed to come on when you start the truck - so you'll know they are working.

Message: Problem has NEVER been fixed. On my 04 Quad Cab V8 4x4 the first set of front rotors warped at 7500 miles of nearly all high-way driving, a few 3-6 hour road trips and the rest highway driving to work. Second set went at just over 12000 miles. Tolerated it until it got so bad if you held a conversation in the truck while I hit the breaks it vibrated so much it sounded like you were talking during an earth quake. I just don't think DC has ever put rotors on that were appropriate for the weights of these trucks. Had I kept going with MOPAR rotors I'd probably still literally be getting a new front set with every oil change.
Now have Raybestos front rotors and Bendix Titanium Metallic II pads. My braking is 100% smooth and absolutely vibration free for the first time ever, no squealing either. Don't believe any bull about the problem being fixed. Go aftermarket. Not necessarily premium fancy racing-style exotic stuff, that's overkill and sometimes more problematic than people expect. Just quality Pep Boys rotors and pads will do the trick.
