Subject: is less mileage or newer year better ? IP: Logged
Message: For a used truck, should I look for a lower mileage vehicle or a newer model year.
For example.
1996, 4x4 Ext cab v8, SLT
62k miles
Dealer asking $8995
1993, 4x4 ext cab V8 LE
80k miles
dealer asking $7950
1997 4x4 ext cab V6
122k miles
pvt party asking $6300
I do like the exterior/interior looks of the 1997 over the 1996 (what's up with that simulated wood grain dashboards. Is there anyway to replace those?)
But 62k is pretty good for a 1996, but then again $6300 for a 4x4 1997 is good too.
There are a lot of choices out there, and this is getting frustrating because I just don't know what is more important. A post of mine last week asked some questions about used Daks, and there seemed to be a 2 person consensus to stay with a V8 over a V6, but not much else in terms of specific things to look for.
Thanks for any of your help

Message: I prefer less age over fewer miles to a point. Everything on the planet deteriorates with time. Vehilces are meant to be driven and don't like to sit for a long time. Obviously anything extreme is not good. i.e. a 2 year old truck with 500,000miles is not preferable to a 4 year old truck with 80,000 miles.
The V6 over V8 debate rages on. I like my V6 but then again I don't tow and I don't race. Most of the RickyRoadRacers here seem to prefer a V8 for power. If you tow anything get the V8. The V6 actually does get very good mileage on the highway and pretty reasonable in the city.

Message: I think it depends what your using it for, Daily tranportation, garage project, etc, etc My opinion is lower miles is allways better, I would take a 92 with 35000 over a 2000 with 100k anyday, but thats just me. Alot of people wont touch something with 100K on it keep that in mind when its time to get rid of it.

Message: I agree with Fran. It really depends on what you using it for. I bought a 1992 2wd Dakota with over 200K mile for $1200. It was my project for the winter so I didn't mind spending the money. If it's a daily driver, I would suggest lower miles, unless the newer model comes with a warranty. If it comes with a warranty, then abuse the hell out of that warranty. But of course it all depends on the use of the vehicle.
Hope this helps somewhat

Message: That seems to be some pretty stiff prices for 7-10 year old Daks, but if the odometer reading is correct, they sure had an easy life. I had a '92 5.2 RC 2wd that I put 217K on. A woman in a T-Bird totalled it, I received a $3750 settlement. Check the used vehicle web sites, or dodge.com and pull up Kelly Blue Book for comparison. The '92 and '93 5.2's had the largest exhaust manifolds of any Magnum 5.2's and ran awesome. Plus, if gas mileage is an issue, GenII Daks weighed about 300 pounds less than their GenIII counterparts. And..drive 'em all...

Message: I look at it like this, a vehicles "born-on" date means nothing to me. If a 97 had 40k while a 99 had 60k the 97 to me truly is newer regardless of which actual date whoever put the truck together. Those prices are steep, take a look at cars.com along with autotrader.com... you can select your area. You'll be amazed how many daks are for sale online that are 30 or less miles from your location.
