How would people at this web site rate the three most expensive, ..... and in many circles considered the best ..... oil filters (Mobil 1, K&N, and Amsoil)? Both the Mobil 1 and the K&N are apparently made by Champion Labs, and the Amsoil apparently by Baldwin/Hastings.

It's hard to say for sure, but so far it looks like if you want the better flowing filters,
you gotta stick with Amsoil and K&N over the Mobil 1.
Champion Labs has told me that the K&N is designed for extremely good flow for racing applications, while the Mobil 1 is designed more for finer filtration. If you drive agressively (and what Dakota Owner doesn't), then K&N or Amsoil might be your better choice. I think if you drive gently and do mostly highway driving, you're fine with the Mobil 1. This is what I know, but the question should be - how do these filters do when subjected to hot oil?

I have tried all three. For me Amsoil is my favorite for many reasons, and especially since the Amsoil is about $2 less expensive than the K&N or the Mobil 1. Of the three, I have eliminated the Mobil 1 entirely from future purchases due to lesser flow and high cost. My last Amsoil Oil Filter that went 12,000 miles showed no sign of wear in the ADBV or bypass and really looked extremely clean inside (using Amsoil synthetic oil).

Message: In response to Mr. H, : Well, in my opinion its because it shows there are no contaminates (wear) in the engine to filter out. Where is it said that an engine has to be dirty? If the oil is dirty its because of improper maintanence. If the engine is properly tuned and the air filter is doing it's job, then there is no reason to find dirt in an oil filter. If his oil filter is clean, he knows his engine is running at peak efficiency, the synthetic oil reduces friction and perhaps wear, and what more can you ask? He must be doing everything right and I am sure Amsoil is a big part of the equation. At least he swears by it.
