Subject: Specific questions to ask re:used Dak IP: Logged
Message: Hi all,
Am in the market for a used Dakota under $8k
-Extended cab required
-2 or 4wd
-Old or new body style
Are there any specific things to look for in a used Dakota:
-Is there an upper mileage I should be worried about
-Specific repairs that should have been made by a certain mileage
-I know 2 or 4wd is a personal choice, but is one significantly better than an another in the Dakotas. Any specific problems with the 4wd
-Any particular engine I should look for or steer away from.
-Any particular year that has a reputation for being better than another
-Thanks very much for any info you can provide.

Message: I wouldn't go for the v6.
And ask yourself, do you REALLY need 4wd?
Less mpg, higher maintenance, and insurance.
If you do, go for it

Message: Personally, I woudl stick with the V-8's. Gas mileage in the Dakota's desn't really change much with the different engines. No matter what you buy, you are gong to have a hard time getting better than 18-20mpg. About the only newer body style trucks you will find under $8K are going to be 4cyl. Get a '94-'96 Dak, and you probably won't have too many problems. You'll want to know the service schedule as far as how often the oil and fluids were changed, and what brand oil/filters were used. Stay away from anything that used Quaker State or Pennzoil products.

Message: Hey HSKR,
How come you'd recommend nothing before 94? Are they not so great in 92-93?
I'm looking around and was thinking about a 92 or 93 (based on what other's on here have said) if I could find one because they had the more powerful V8.
Are the 94+ better?
Thanks
