 Subject: about to buy, is this truck any good?

Hey i'm about to buy a dodge dakota 5.9L. I know their crazy fast, but i heard they have REALLY poor history. So i'm kinda sketchy on buying it. I need to know some Pros and Cons of this truck and it i really should buy it. He wants 10k for this 99' R/T w/ 50k miles on it.. any help would be nice..

She'll do it, the 360 is a dependable motor, and many folks have seen much higher mileage than that out of their R/T's.
The MAIN concern is: does he have the service records, does the truck reflect any damage at all, how many owners,etc.????
Run a carfax on the VIN and check for previous damage, AND find out what kind of oil he's run in it.
There are TONS of mods out there for the R/T that are cheap and you could make it a Vette-eater
with less money than a 4.7.
I bought my 4.7 Dak- Sport with a salvage title and only 8k miles, but I couldn't pass up the deal for $11.5k after looking at the same truck at the dealership for about $21k!!
It sounds reasonable though and if it has a good bill of health it's a good truck.

The trannys have a poor history of reliability. especialy overdrive going out. Check the fluid, make sure its not overly dirty.

Find out all you can about the owner and previous owners like carfax etc, bring the truck to a shop to be checked out before you buy if there is nothing wrong with truck then owner should be ok with it, if he gives you a hard time instant red flag, Walk away, good luck

Make sure you test drive it! Check everything! Make sure to check and see if it shifts at wot from 1st to 2nd without a problem! The 99's dont have that problam as much as the 01's but check it out! Also check behind the radiator and see if the fan was pushed into it! Good way to see if its been in a wreck(in the front) Made the mistake myself about 5 years ago when I bought a 96 dak and didnt look at that and then when i did ...go figure it had the fan imprint in it! Also check for buffing hints! Like white powder looking spots that dont come off! Could also tell if its been wrecked! Just my opinion!

yeah i've known this guy for a while, the truck used to be his rents, and i know that it wasnt in a wreck. I'm just worried about having it for a year or so then the tranny dropping out on me. I was thinking about going ahead dropping a good tranny in it like 6 months after i buy it, and if at all possible i would love a 5spd in it. the guy wants 10 for this 50k 99' I'm pretty sure i can talk him down to 9. Should i just keep looking or should i ponder this one for a bit longer?

Well if you can get it for 9K I'd go for it! I got a deal on mine for 13000 with 18,000 miles on it! Its a 2001! I couldnt pass that up!

The tranny issues mentioned aren't as bad as people make them seem. I had a '99 R/T with 120K miles on it pushing almost 300hp to the wheels right before I wrecked it, and still had the stock tranny in it. The tranny was never modifed, but the fluid was changed every 25K. Biggest thing to look for(and this is coming from a guy who has owned two different R/Ts) is ball joints and controll arm bushings. Also, I woudl need a little more info on the truck before I woudl say it is a good buy. Any modifications to it?? Is it a RC or CC?? How bout tires?? As mentioned before, what oil was used and how often was the oil and fluids changed?? Definitly test drive it and check things for yourself. If it's a cC, make sure it has the black wrap around the driveshaft. If not, you might need to get it changed or risk having driveleine vibrations and screwing the tranny.
