Try Target. Mobil 1 at my local Target is 3.39 a quart. I am not sure how long this last though, so I bought all 18. That comes out to being a little cheaper than buying the 5 qts for 17.88.

Mobil 1 is like 3.6x, sixty something at Target. Try there. Wal-Mart just got in some 5 qt. jugs a few weeks ago, but now it's 23 bucks. That's total crap. Target's the way to go now.

dennis,

you stated, "Local Wal Mart says they get them 2x a year and that next shipment retails for for $23/jug" which is $4.60 a quart.

That's higher than what I pay for Amsoil 10W30. In the 2.5 gallon jugs I get the 10W-30 for $4.40 a quart.

Amsoilsponsor here in Michigan they sell for $18.88 for 5 quart cantatiner. My quick math comes out to about $3.77 a quart and their is no shipping. That is pretty hard to beat especial if you are going to get rid of the vechile in 3-5 years! I realiase that Amsoil is a better product and that they have the other products we need like tranny fluid but the price comparsion is hard to beat. $3.77 a quart v.s. $5.20-$7.80 plus shipping. Last I checked shipping was not built into the price of Amsoil's products so shipping must be included and I am sure their is some hazmet charges or someting in their too??? I use Amsoil products but you really should not try to compete on price that is not Amsoils strong points especial when you get Walmart and Mobil Corp into the mix!

Sandman, Glad to see you are still around. I was worried about you. You are correct in all that you say. I can never tout Amsoil as the "cost effective" choice except for extended drains.
--------------------------------------------------
I am posting here because I want you to comment on an "Extended Drain" tech response from Redline to an associate of mine. It follows:

and I quote:

"Red Line stands alone in the ability to provide extended drain intervals and lower friction and wear. Red Line Synthetic oils have been shown to last 25,000 miles in field tests; however we recommend shorter drain intervals in order to provide a margin of safety with the oil. We recommend draining the oil between 12,000 and 18,000 miles depending on the type of service and the degree of blow-by gases contaminating the oil. High-speed freeway driving is easy on the oil due to its excellent thermal stability. If the engine is worn and if considerable stop-and-go driving is involved, 10,000-12,000 mile drains are suggested. A good rule of thumb to follow is to change the oil at least once a year regardless the mileage. Manufacturers warranty requirements should be followed while under warranty. Filters can be changed every 5,000 to 7,500 miles in order to assure filter durability is not a problem. Red Line makes a 15W40 Diesel Engine Oil for diesel engines. The diesel engine oils contain significantly greater detergency and total base number (TBN) which helps keep the engine clean. This additional detergency is not recommended for gasoline engines since it could increase the tendency for spark plug fouling. Even though the Red Line Motor Oils meet the specifications for diesel engines, the Diesel Engine Oil should be used where extended drains (10,000 miles +) are required."
--------------------------------------------------
Most of the drain intervals I've seen with Redline have been 5k-10k miles. I don't really think it's suitable for what I'd call extended drains due to all the moly. I've yet to see a 12k interval with Redline, much less 25k. I think they're dreaming ... and they certainly don't stand alone on extended drains. Mobil1 advertised a 25k oil change interval years ago, and Amsoil offers it now.
--------------------------------------------------
Here are my thoughts and earlier comments on the three favorite oils mentioned on this site:

Redline is an excellent synthetic oil, but VERY pricey, and they offer no Preferred Customer Program whereby customers can receive approximately 20% off retail pricing (Amsoil does). Redline has an excellent additive package.

Of course I am particular to Amsoil. Amsoil has an excellent additive package, and offers extended drain intervals. Amsoil has an excellent price/performance ratio.

Mobil1 is good for an "on-the-shelf" synthetic oil, but it could be better. My brother-in-law owns two dealerships in Europe and the European Formulation for Mobil1 there is much better than the U.S. Mobil1 Formulation. It is a weaker formulation in the U.S. to compete price-wise with the other "on-the-shelf" oils.
--------------------------------------------------
There are other 100% synthetics but not as readily available as Redline, Amsoil, and Mobil1. I mentioned these three because they are the "favorite" 100% true synthetics on this site.

Oh yeah, Redline is the best raceing oil I have ever used. I doubt that it is anywear near as good for daily driveing aplication where extended drains are desired. My experince with redline came in the form of raceing. I have also done some testing on C5 Corvettes that are raced booth professionaly and in amature raceing events. Under these conditions max HP, max film strength, low ash, and high heat capcity is the most important factors. Seldom does oil stay in the remote sump any longer then two races before it is replaced. Some teams do a complete tear down after every race so the fluids are replaced at this time. To date the longest I have left oil in is 10,000 miles on an test mule I used to evalute oil. In my daily drivers I have not gone past about 7500 miles. I have no doubt that Amsoil more then meets my needs for my daily driver. I will be getting my prefered customer account soon. I need to get tranny fluid and my local dealer closed up shop so I will be caling you sooner then later. Even though I prefer polyol based oil I no longer use Redline. I can not see paying the high price for their product for street use especialy if I decide to take advantage of extended drains. Amsoil has done a better job of makeing their product attrative. It is better overall then most other synthetics available, preffered customer account saves you money compared to Redline and offers a complete package: oil's, chenicals, car care products, filtration, plugs, wires......... When people ask who makes the best oil they should also be asking "For what Application?". I doubt that anyone on this board plans on keeping their truck long enough to notice any difference between Mobil-1 engine oil, Amsoil or Redline in their daily driver. The key difference for me is that only Amsoil and Redline make a trany fluid I can use in my 45RFE transmission and power steering pump. Amsoil also offers the plugs that I use and the wiper blades, and filtration systems I want to use. I think the filtration systems are the most importnat aspects of amsoil secess!!

dakotaster,

Depending upon the manufacturer, the "oil life monitor" counts engine revolutions, operating temperatures, and RPM's, ... but rarely time, hence the requirement in the owner's manual to change the oil "per the indicator" or "12 months", whichever comes first. Some vehicles do have an indicator that counts time as well (Volvo for one), and will remind you if you have gone 12 months (or xxxx miles) without an oil change.

NOTE ... Measures and monitors Temperatures, RPM's, Time, # of Short Trips

******** The Monitor DOES NOT Analyze Your Oil ********
--------------------------------------------------
FUEL ECONOMY

Fuel economy can be very difficult for the consumer to accurately gauge for various reasons. Every time you hit the road conditions are different ... head wind, tail wind, drafting, grade of highway, coasting time, passing, etc.

It has been proven by AMSOIL, through use of industry accepted fuel economy tests, field demonstrations and as witnessed by most of our customers, that switching to synthetic oils and lubricants can (and does) improve fuel economy (mpg).

Also, consider for a moment ... the oil viscosity are you are currently using. Depending upon your driving habits, conditions, and climate ... switching viscosities can improve fuel economy also.

Not a bad price. However, there was a display of 5 quart jugs of Castroil racing oil next to the M1 for $6.88!

NASCAR Race Cars use every oil imaginable - Mobil1, Redline, Royal Purple, Amsoil, QS, Castrol, etc., and some you have never even heard of (special formulations by small speciality companies).... AND .... the Mobil1 that some race cars use AIN'T the Mobil1 you buy off the shelf in the jugs. The Mobil1 you buy is a watered down version when compared to the Mobil1 the Race Teams use.

So what if Mobil1 is the "official lubricant of Nascar". It's just advertising. Do you think the VIAGRA car has VIAGRA in the tank? Does the TIDE car have clothes detergent in the transmission?

your right, it "ain't" the same stuff in the race cars. Our engines are no where near those engines, so that would be pretty dumb huh? Now, porsche and ferrari as well as a few others put mobile 1 in their motors from the factory. Oil is pretty much oil but for a few dollars extra, i get the good stuff. Anyone ever heard of SFR?
