The Ferrari Enzo uses special Shell Helix 10W-60 synthetic oil, of which the V-12 requires 12.2 quarts, runs $60 per quart. You do the math but it sounds criminal to me @ over $700 for an oil change. I guess this makes Redline/Amsoil/RP look downright cheap in comparison.

davidj, The summer heat getting to you eh?

Prestone anti-freeze is also the official anti-freeze of NASCAR.

That's all fine and dandy but the problem is that ethylene glycol (the main component of Prestone) is OUTLAWED on the track because in case of a spill (oh and there will be lots of spills w/ a radiator puncture) the EG makes the track ultra slippery. So .... Prestone is the OFFICIAL COOLANT ... but no race car can use it .... Ha Ha.

One person I know in NASCAR says some teams run 50/50 of water and Redline Water Wetter. No word on whether this is true or not but water is indeed the coolant, NOT the green/orange/yellow stuff.

Just because its official doesn't make it mandatory to use!!

I.e. Budweiser is the sponsor for Little E, it doesn't mean they all drink Bud during the race!

Also if they're sponsored by Pepsi, Coke, etc... they have to use their sponsor's cups but they can fill it with whatever beverage they want. Like drink Coke in a Pepsi cup - that's really being a rebel! Britney spears should have done that.

Found Mobil 1 0W-30 a dollar a quart at Walmart, in Texas. Not what I run, but I could not resist. Now the question. If I mix 50/50 with 10W-30, will I have 5W-30? Sounds right, but I would like verification. Thanks.

Phil,

You located the $1 quart Mobil1 0w-30 in Texas.

People in the southern states don't trust the "0w-" viscosity (see below for a definition of viscosity and the definition of why an oil would be labeled "0w-" ), and don't really need that viscosity with the mild winters.

That viscosity doesn't sell well in the South, and in the end I suppose it gets closed out, but it is good oil. If you want to ... buy a bunch of it. It is a bit volatile however, so you may have to add some after a while.

As far as viscosity and mixing ... No it won't be a 5w-30. I would be afraid to mix the 10w-30 with this at all. The 0w- and the 10w- Mobil1 formulations don't work well together.

Bottom Line ... Great deal and stock up!
--------------------------------------------------

INFORMATION:

VISCOSITY..in the general term is defined as " a fluids resistance to flow". it's a measure of the internal friction of the fluid or the resistance to the movement of one layer of molecules relative to an adjacent layer.

THE LOWER (SMALLER or FIRST #, as in "10w-_) NUMBER.. is the Cold Cranking measurement, made at low temperatures, using a concentric cylinder viscometer to predict the oils cranking resistance in an engine during cold starting.

The measuring devices, or viscosmeters, most often used are in the form of close-fitting concentric cylinders. The fluid being evaluated is placed between the cylinder walls, the outer cylinder is held stationary and the inner cylinder is rotated. The speed of rotation is measured for a given force to calculate the viscosity, most commonly reported in cp or centipoise units. Also known as Absolute Viscosity.

THE HIGHER (BIGGER or SECOND #, as in "-30") NUMBER...is commonly measured in capilary tubes, in which the time for a fixed volume of fluid to flow through the tube under gravity at operating temp (100c)is measured and reported as cSt or centistokes. This is used most commonly to report the normal operating viscosity of motor oils or the higher number.
-------------------------------------------------

" 0W- " is a viscosity GRADE, not a viscosity MEASUREMENT.

When testing for cold fluidity, the temperature is lowered approximately 5 degrees centigrade between each test.

The Cold Crank Simulator Apparent Viscosity is tested at:

-20 C for 10W-
-25 C fpr 5W-
-30 C for 0W-

It is my understanding that the oil has to be labelled at the lowest temperature it meets the specifications.

It may not be long before someone comes out with a " -5W-30 " which would correspond with -35 C.

Walmarts around Pittsburgh, PA do not have any jugs either, just cases and by the quart. A quart is $4.30 each.

Not to disrespect the South (I was born in Georgia). However my above statement is true, and you will not see the Mobil1 "0w-" discounted in the North where the demand is great. I am certain that it it was probably a liquidation due to the fact that it was a very slow mover. I've seen it before in other stores in the South.

Anyone else notice that the bottle cap is SUPER TIGHT. Those little prongs really cut my hand.

Also, the M1 5W-30 seems very dark out of the bottle, it was almost as if I'm pouring used oil.... but on the dipstick its invisible!
