Subject: Shock attachment problem

Message:
First, the vehicle: '98 Durango 5.2 4x4.

When I was switching from my snow wheels/tire to my summer tires, I noticed that shock bottom attachment bolt on the PS has sheared off… That explained the “mushy” ride and clinking noise coming from suspension over last few weeks. I attributed the ride to snow tires and it was too cold to clime under the car to examine the source of clinking noise.

Upon closer examination of front shock lower attachment bolt, I realized that it is a terrible way of connecting the shock to the lower control arm! Not only do they cantilever the bolt off one side (not the best idea), they also used a 12mm bolt with full thread. The unnecessarily threaded section of the bolt is much weaker and that is where my bolt broke.

This must have been an issue for some of the off road guys. So is there a recognized way of correcting this?

Also, does the 4x4 Durango share its front conrtrol arms with the 4x4 Dakotas?

Thanks,

Leon
