Subject: Ball Joint Replacement IP: Logged
Message: I just got my Moog replacement ball joint and I am ready to tackle it. Just looking for any hints or short cuts. My plan of attack is an air chisel and 4-1/2" grinder for the rivets.
Thanks
Brent

Message: hi brent
i've done this job myself on my 2000
2x4 quad cab. do you have a ball joint seperator or can borrow one? this tool will help in removing the old ball joints from the spindle. also i would suggest that you drill a pilot hole
thru the center of each rivet before taking the air chisel to cut it off. i even had to step
up several drill bit sizes to enlarge the hole in the center of the ball joint. this will help in cutting thru the rivet. use cobalt drill bits if you can they cut/drill better.
i also replaced the supplied nuts & bolts from moog with grade 8 hardware, i think i used 7/16 or 3/8 nuts and bolts. i had to use a bigger drill bit just to clean up the holes a little so the bigger hardware will slide thru the holes of the a-arms easy.( just take one of your new ball joints with you to the parts or hardware store to size it up.) to me the new nuts and bolts from moog are to small, just my 2 cents.
also you did'nt say if you had a 2x4 or a4x4.
the 4x4,s lowers are different fron the 2x4. sorry for the long post, have fun
