Subject: fuel guage - idiot light IP: Logged
Message: Anyone have any idea how to disable the 'low fuel' idiot light relay?
My low light indicator appears as soon as my fuel guage hits 1/8th a tank left. I have the 22 gallon tank in my '00 CC 4x4 4.7L V8 SLT. I find it highly annoying to have to look at it when I have 1/8th a tank left.
I've fueled up as soon as the light came on, and I could only take in 15.8 gallons. Which, means that I should have at least 6-7 gallons left. Is this normal for the fuel guage in gen3 dakotas?
thanks for your support

Message: I guess it is the norm. My 01 light comes on at 1/8th of a tank also.
I've heard the same from others too. Guess it could be anoying if you are making a lot of small trips after 1/8 of a tank is left.

Message: I would be careful about wanting to disconnect the light, because the fuel pump is cooled by the gas in the tank, so the lower you run your tank, the hotter the fuel pump will get. Unless I am on a road trip, I fill up when I have about a quarter of a tank left. The cooler the pump runs, the longer it will last.

Message: What would be interesting to know is how hot the in tank fuel pump gets.Think about 1 to 2 gal.or less of gas on a hot day in a closed, non vented, tank and a spark from a over heated fuel pump.If it could happen in a aircraft that uses less volital fuel, could it happen here?

Message: Same here. Mine comes on at exactly 1/8 of a tank and dings at me every so often until I fill up. I guess it is useful for those who don't really pay attention to their gas gauge though.

Message: I wouldn't disconnect that light just yet. In my 95 dak sport the fuel gauge quick working entirely around 75,000 miles. I would fix it but the sending unit is about $300. Now the low fuel light is my only way to tell when i need to really fill up.

Heh, My 95 dak's sending unit went out at 74,998 miles. The dealer could get me a new one at 250 but it was way too much for that. Now my idiot light doesn't even work at 81,000. It has to be replaced before my 8 cylinder goes in.

Message: You can purchase a new pump assembly at
www.kragen.com
for about $170. Get the Carter piece because that is what is in our trucks now and Carter makes them for Ma Mopar. Saves $80-130.

Message: A cheap way to do this easily, so you you dont have to look at the light is to put a small piece of black electrical tape on top of the light, it will still come on, it will just block it so you dont have to look at it. Just a really cheap, and very effective fix to your little problem. Now if only everything was that easy!!!

It has nothing to do with the size of the tank. Even with the 15 gallon tank it will still come on at 1/8 tank. Mine usually has 40 miles left when it comes on. It's an idiot light like everyone says, and it's for the idiots that can't remember to fill up when the guage gets low. Just turn the stereo up a little more, and you won't even hear the ding. The light really doesn't bother me that much. I suppose you want the cruise control light to not work anymore either?? The fuel light isn't anymore annoying than the cruise light when you have cruise turned on.

Message: I have a 92 dakota that had a erratic fuel gauge and replaced the variable resistor with one from a junkyard for 5 bucks. I pulled the part myself and put the one in my truck and the gauge worked fine. That lasted until the fuel pump went a year later and the I got a whole new unit for 170 bucks from Napa

Message: I have a 94 Dakota SLT and with a little more than 1/2 a tank that stupid idiot light came on. To be on the safe side of everything I Filled up Just in case something else was mal-functioning but the stupid thing is still on. Any suggestions beside black tape? It has happened once before with more than 1/2 a tank, just filled up and it went away. didn't work this time.
