I now am the proud owner of a 2003 Dakota Quad Cab STL Plus with 4.7 V8 LSD 3.55 gears Tow Package and HD Service Group. I am going to purchase in the near future a boat. My first question is what kind of boats are you all towing, lenght and weight. My second question is how long of a boat and much weight should I safely pull with this truck. And one last one, would I have a problem pulling say a 18-20 foot boat weighing 3500 to 4000 lbs from say the St.Louis area to the Lake of the Ozarks about 300 Miles. Thanks for the input.

Arron, I answered your post in the V8 board. You'll have no problems with a 4500 lb boat, especially if your boat trailer has surge brakes.

My total boat weight is 1500 lb. plus trailer & my 3.9 tows it with absolutely no problems.
You don't even know it's behind.
With a 4.7 you'll have no problems with the size you're gonna pull either.

Thanks for all of the info. However it seems as if everyone is towing a fishing boat. I should have clearified my question. I am wanting to pull a ski boat or runabout. Will I have any problems with this? And are any of you towing such a boat? Thanks for the info.

Arron, it doesn't matter what kind of boat your towing as long as it doesn't exceed the capacity of your truck.

Also check the regs in your area to see if trailer brakes are required for the weight of your boat.

We have a 21" Four Winns it weighs about 4500 with fuel, gear and all and my 99 5.2 doesn't have any trouble pulling it. My suggestion would be anything over like 2500-3000 pounds get yourself a set of surge brakes, they don't cost alot and will save the brakes on your truck and they make stopping much easier.

Any trailer size over a pup trailer should have
some sort of brakes on it.

Even if you have a one-ton dually to pull a
3500# single axle trailer with, one day it's
going to be so slick (icy or muddy) that you'll
need brakes on the trailer to keep it under
control. Also, maybe you'll need to pull that
trailer with a smaller car once someday -and in
order to use it at all, you'll need brakes. I'd
go for a 2-inch ball and 7-pin harness on
everything I'd tow and all tow vehicles; this
will give you the best standardization and
flexibility.

MUCH better to go with good electric brakes,
too. You get a lot better and smoother control
with them, and the size of tow vehicle can vary
more, for a given trailer size.

Sorry my picture didn't work but my boat isn't a fishing boat. It's heavy and I pull it all over the place, up and down the mountains here without any problems. Here's the link:
