You guys are so helpful I think I'll try again. If I get a Dakota quad cab 4x4 it seems it does not come with a manual transfer case that I am familiar with but rather an electronic AWD configeration. The 1500 Ram comes with the floor mounted transfer case but the Dakota seems to not offer that kind of 4wd. I am kind of leery of AWD and associated viscous couplings etc because of the past troubles assoiated with them. What do you folks know about this issue? Thanks in advance.

The dakota still comes with a traditional transfer case, but it is now controlled via a switch than a lever ( I know I hate this too). But there is 2wd, 4-hi and 4-lo where 4-hi and 4-low both front and rear driveshafts have to rotate at the same speed.
There is also an AWD transfer case but it is not very popular.
