Subject: Rusty wheels IP: Logged
Message: I've got a nice set of chrome 15" American Racing wheels on my Dakota but they have a little rust around the nuts and the center cap etc. Is there a way to reduce this rust? Or does anyone have tips on dealing with it in any way?
If its not possible, how much might it cost to have a set re-chromed? Would it be worth it on a not-so-perfect daily driver?
Thanks for the help
This may be a repeat post 'cause I tried it before and I never saw it appear on the board.

Message: Rechroming costs anywhere from 70-90$ a rim. pretty expensive IMO. if its jsut surface rust fine steel wool would get rid of it but on chrome once rust starts its pretty impossible to get rid of it
if its jsut somethign to drive around i wouldnt worry about it too much. But if it bothers you i would use some fine steel wool

Message: Steel wool might make it worse in the long run. I've had great luck with a French cleaning product called "Outar" ( pronounced water ). It will take off light rust and leave a protective coating. Local Harley mechanic turned me onto it,use it on the old chrome on my bike a couple of times a season, should be great for your chrome rims.

Message: yeah, "outar"-water is used here in pa by almost all the big rig truck detailers, thats where i first came across it, and it pretty much will work miracles on chrome. if you can't find it anywhere just go to the closet truck stop and ask around, someone there will know where to get it.

Message: I have an 87 dakota too, with chrome plated wheels. I let it sit a long time cause i drove my 97 more than it, and it jsut sat, so i washed it and the wheels were rusty on the lugs and center cap, and on the wheel itself. with some time, and elbow grease, and EAGLE ONE WADDING POLISH the rust should come off, be persitent, that helps a lot, and keep rubbing them, all my rust was pitted, and the polish helped a bunch, hope this helps you, L8R.
