Subject: Thank you, saved $86 and hastle IP: Logged
Message: I started my Dakota a few mornings ago and the check engine light came on. Thanks to this forum, I determined it was p0442 (Small leak detected in the evaporative purge system). I retightened the gas cap, performed the reset, and the problem appears to be solved for now.
I called the dealer anyway and they told me they would charge me $86 if it was due to a loose gas cap even though the pickup is still under warranty. They wouldn't tell me how to reset the error code either. Thanks to everyone who provides information on this forum!

Easy. Warranty covers manufacturer defects. The gas cap not being tightened down completely would be considered an owner/operator error. Thus making it an issue they wont honor the factory warrant on. Kind of BS that they would charge you that much money for that but that's how it goes.

Message: STEALERSHIP is right: I called them to find out the cost of getting a Trac-Lok installed in the 9.25 rear end, and the guy read it straight from the book to me "Ahh, Yessir, that'll be $340, cuz it says here it'll take 5.6 hrs" , like it would actually take 5.6 hrs. to do.
I read several articles on THIS install only taking 2 to 3 hours at most. This guy would do it in 2 and charge for the full 5.6, and you KNOW he'd get me for new $hit I don't even need at the full markup for a bill that would come to better than $400.
Those people have the $hittiest policies on gutting the consumer. I'm buying the tools with half the money they'll charge me to do the job, and have valuable experience and some good tools.
$crew the dealership, They're ALL about their pockets, freakin sharks if ya ask me.
You buy a new car, and 2 weeks later you lose 20% of the value, really as soon as you drive away in it. I'll probably NEVER buy a brand new car unless it's a good deal, and I've NEVER seen one.
