Subject: Good mileage to buy IP: Logged
Message: What's a good mileage to buy a dakota/durango? I am talking about enough mileage to let the previous owner(s) work everything out so I won't have to, such as tranny, engine, 4x4, etc.
I am assuming around 50-60K?
Also what are the chances of it living beyond 150K miles (I plan on keeping this vehicle for a while).
Thanks

Message: well lets see...last dak i had was a 97...bought it with 70,000 on it...drove it till it had about 95,000 on it and in that time replaced a tranny, timing chain, A/C went out, heater core was clogged, and was misfiring even after a tune up...but that was a 3.9L and from what many on here say, that is really nothing out of the usual for that engine. Now i have a 01' R/T with about 30,000 on it and its running great, has no signs of anything goin wrong...hope it keeps up...dunno if that helps...but i tried...

Message: Right now if you can afford it buy new. Otherwise I doubt there is a magic mileage, traded mine with 85k and had no problems at all.. I say look at the overall truck to see what kind of condition it is in paying particular attention ot fit / finish etc... look closely for any accident damage... If something seems out of what from factory at all walk away... jsut my opinion though but I have yet to get burned.

Message: I bought mine at 95,000km.(60,000mi)2000/ 4.7/4spd-auto/4x4/posi/fully loaded model with the tire+ suspension pkg. It doesn't even squeek. The guy who owned it b-4 me, bought it spcl order and traded up for a new one, in July 2002. he was happy with it. Do buy extended warrenty, budget about $2000 for a powertrain gold plus package.
I havent had a problem, but one tranny could pay you back for that warrenty. Also get all the maintainence history from the previous owner before you buy it (you dont want someone elses neglected headache)

Message: I've seen trucks with 125,000 run smoother and better than others with 40,000, depending on how they were treated. Definitely run a CARFAX on the VIN to check for collisions too. You can kinda tell by the person you're buying it from most times, sometimes you get a great deal, sometimes you don't. Sometimes folks sell it to ya' with problems and honestly didn't know they were there, and sometimes they're just snakes and they know it has problems and just lie through their teeth.
I bought a salvage title 01' Dak 4.7 5 spd with 8,000 miles on it, and this truck looks and runs and does everything perfect. Got it for $11,500, which was about $10,000 less than the automatics at the dealership.
The dude lied to me about the damage as it was SEVERE according to CARFAX, and he just said it had a new radiator support, new fenders, grill, and hood, bumper, but it retained the factory condenser and radiator. What a freakin liar. Anyway, it still drove perfect and the alignment and front end are all very tight like it should be.
These trucks are TOUGH man, so drivetrain and exterior/interior are all I would worry about.
