Subject: Shims or No-Shims? Trac-Lok:
IP: Logged

Message:
I have the non locking 9.25" Rearend and just bought a Dana Trac-Lok for it for $75!

Q: When I install this sucker will I be able to reinstall it with the original shims and just reassemble it, or will I need to take it to someone that can do all the shimming and so forth.

(My rearend only has 30k miles on it it that makes any difference about the shims)

Thanks for the advice!

No shims in your rear for the carrier.
there is a tool to adjust the (adjusters) on each side that sets backlash and carrier bearing preload.
Check out the instalation instructions for the auburn posi unit on their site http://www.auburngear.com/

What is the procedure for installing this posi-unit?
For instance: HOW do you pull the axles? for starters

Anything else I should know?

Thanks for the input..

BTW, the Auburn site was down, but I'll check back in a bit to see it, but I would fer sure like a little input from someone that's personally done it!
thanx,
Matt

I personally did it to my truck a couple of weeks back. You will need the tool (my local dealer let me borrow it). The axles come out after removing the pin in the center of the diff. That will allow the c clips to come out.
You will also need a dial indicator woth a magnetic base to mesure backlash before and after.

Thanks, but I found a guy to do it for $160 in Conway, so that should be the best route.
Thanks

How'd your first motor-build turn out Stonecold?
Good? Hope so.

I'd never touched a motor besides changing the oil before I built a Mariner 2.0 liter v-6 150 from the ground up, and that sucker would haul a$$ on a 16' Gator Slingshot, about 70 with a midrange prop! Oh yeah, I built the lower unit up too.

I probably couldn't afford the tools to do it with: how much does a preload adjuster cost? How bout' a dial indicator? Probably more than $200.

I saw somewhere that a torsion bar from an old b body chrysler can be used as an adjuster. Its basically just a bar with a 36mm hext end on it.
You can pick up a dial indicator for under $100.

Thanks for the help SilverstoneV8!
Hope the site has some good stuff....
And I hope that Trac-Lok will keep wheelspin down.

I found out that if you keep the same gearset and only change the differential, all you'll have to set is the Ring backlash, It's easy to make the preload tools with some big nuts with the 1-7/16" outside diameter welded to some all-thread , and then weld some nuts on the outside end so you can turn them with a big crescent wrench.
You should still use some pattern paint to make sure the pinion-depth lines up, but you shouldn't even have to pull the pinion at all.
The only concern will be with the ring backlash.

There are 3 great links I've found that tell you how to change a gearset online.

If anyone wants them I'll post em.

Thanks for any intelligent help you guys gave me

Ok, here they are:

http://ramchargercentral.com/boards/index.php?board=&action=howtoshow;id=13

http://www.auburngear.com

The 2nd link is the best one I think, but these articles are definitely awesome to be free info.
