Subject: Will a 1k/ohm 1/2 w Resistor Work? IP: Logged
Message: I went today to find the 50k potenti-O-meter, a 1 k/ohm , 1/4 watt, 2% resistor, a little black box, and a DPDT micro switch for the IAT adjuster.
All I found was a 2% 1/2 watt 1 k/ohm resistor...
Will this work in place of the 1/4 watt the plans call for?
I found the cool little black box at Radio Shack along with the switch...
A TV repair shop here in town had the 1/2 watt resistor for $.50.
A little tech help would be nice...
THX Alot

Message: Yes, it will. The way to test this is to fill a bathtub full of water, plug in a hair dryer, get in the tub and drop the hair dryer in the tub.

Message: Thanks Radioshack man..
I already have a resistor though, and I would like to find out if the one I've got will work since they're so freakin expensive ;)

Message: The only difference in your two resistors is that the 1/2 watt resistor will dissipate more heat than the 1/4 watt, and will actually stay cooler given the same amount of current through it. From what I read in your post, the resistor you wanted and the one you got are exactly the same resistance and tolerance values, so no sweat. a 1K, 2% 50 watt resistor would work exactly the same, it'd just be huge. The 1/2 watt is a little bigger physically than the 1/4 watt, but it's the same thing otherwise.
