Subject: New Dakota and brake noise IP: Logged
Message: Hi all !
Just bought a new 2003 Dakota Quad Cab 4x4, and I get a groaning brake noise when backing up in reverse.
Doesn't sound normal to me, or maybe it will go away, but I will be contacting my dealer.
Anyone else had this problem or is it a problem ?
Thanks!

Message: My 03 QC did the same thing for the first few weeks but I haven't heard anything for two or three months now. A lot of people have complained about this, I think you just have to wear the "new" off the rotors.

Message: Kevin... Thanks for the reply. I will call my sales guy and see what he says--may be interesting!
By the way, this is 3rd Dakota. My first was a 1987 4x4 regular cab (red). The second was a 1996 4x4 Club cab (red). My new 2003 QC is silver--had to try a different color (no red in stock, so I had'em knock more off the price!). I love it so far !

Message: I just picked up my new CC on Monday, same graoning noise when the brakes have been sitting for a few... I'll give it a couple weeks or a thousand miles, whatever comes first....
This is also my 3rd Dakota (2nd new one).. I had an 88 longbed 2wd v6, a 2000 CC 2wd 4.7 5-speed sport plus, and this is a 2003 4wd cc 4.7 5-speed sport plus... Gotta love them...

Message: My '03 had the same groaning noise in reverse for the two months I had it. Especially in cold weather. Now it's groan free. I tend to agree with the rest of the posts, probably some seating in of the rear brakes (mine sounded like it came from the rear passenger side).
My biggest hassle now is a high pitched whining (or whistling) from the rear drivers side, sounds like it's near the fuel pump area. Guess I'll need to talk to my dealer when I go in for the first oil change.
Let us know what the dealer tells you.

Message: Yeah, the salesman I bought my Dak from gave me a coupon for a free oil & filter change & a free diagnostic. About a month later, I got another coupon from Chrysler for another free oil & filter change. I thought there might be some hidden charges in this offer, so I called my salesman & he said all their customers that buy new vehicles from them get this deal.
I bought my Dak from Parks Motors in Augusta, KS. A friend of mine bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited from them a couple of years ago & got the same treatment. I have to admit, they are a first class outfit. I've never been treated this good at any car dealership, EVER. Also, I've had a couple calls from the shop & my saleman checking to see how things are going. Even though I prefer to change my own oil & do most of the work on my vehicles, I'll take freebies when I can get them.

Message: Yeah I think if it's a five star dealer, you get the free oil changes and hand holding for a while. I was actually getting annoyed at how often they would call to make sure everything was ok.
I had a noise from my rear brakes in reverse as well, but it is getting less and less everyday.
Greg--The high pitch whining, does it do it only at higher speeds? Mine seems to do it at about 63 mph, but goes away as you go faster.

Message: My 2002 with 2k miles had the terrible groan from front and rear brakes while creeping with the brakes barely applied. None of my other vehicles do this.
I dropped it of at the dealer. When I returned they said my rotors and drums can rust overnight and that was the problem. What a joke..!
I changed the front pads to Raybestos Ceramic Enhanced pads. Solved the front. Nice smooth brakes. No Noise at any time.
For the rear I lightly applied the emergency brake and drove backwards while hitting the brakes. This will adjust them faster

Message: My 03 CC 4X4 , 4.7 , auto has the " noise " but it does it less and less as the miles add up . I have 2400 miles and it only does it occastionaly.I got a oil change coupon from Chrysler but not from my Five Star . So far I'm very happy with my 3rd Dakota . I haven't heard the whine from the rearend , but I ordered the Infinaty speakers so I only hear the radio .

Message: Newdakowner,
No, the whine is at idle & I can hear it until I get a few miles per hour up. I've narrowed the noise down to the left rear wheel well, I can hear the fuel pump running & that seems to be where the whine is coming from, sorta like a vacuum line that has a hole in it or is disconnected.
I've heard the same noise on other Dodge products, a friend has a new Town & Country van that has the same noise & I heard a muted whine on a Durango sitting in front of the hospital where I work. However, my buddy who owns the Jeep Grand Cherokee is totally quiet. Go figure.
