Subject: Dakota Bed Lid and Liner question IP: Logged
Message: Hi all !
I'm a proud owner of a new 2003 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab !
I'm planning on getting a sprayed in Rhino bed liner and (when I save up some more money!), I want to get a fiberglass lid cover.
A local shop has the ARE lid for $700 installed, and I like the looks with the lines that match the front hood--cool ! I will look at other lids at a nother shop where I am having the Rhino liner installed.
My real question concerns the spraying in of the liner and the fitting of the lid later. My initial plan is to just have it sprayed in under the rails, but having the top of the tailgate sprayed would be nice to protect it from things resting on top of it (like boards, plywood, etc).
Will the bed lid fit tight enough for a proper seal on the tailgate with the sprayed top ?
I definitely want a tight waterproof seal for storing stuff in the bed.
Any tips on lids and liners appreciated.
Thanks !

Message: I have a Vortex spray on liner over the rail and a ARE tonneau cover but mine is a 6 foot bed not a quad cab. I have NO problems with leaks unless I take the hose and aim it where the tonneau and the bed rail meet. otherwise there are no problems with it.

Message: Rob... Ever taken your truck with bed cover through a car wash ? No leaks ?
I live in NE Ohio and the winters are nasty and messy with road salt and cinders, so I often drove my old '96 Dakota thru car washes, but it had an open bed; my new Dakota will have a fiberglass lid cover...

Message: No matter what bed cover you get, any high pressure water stream sprayed where the bed cover meets the rails will result in water getting past and into the bed. If you get a good over the rail bed cover(nt one that sits on the rails) it's much harder to get water in the bed. But no bed cover will ever be water tight. The tailgate will always allow water in due to the lack of any type of tailgate seal. If you want to go over the rails and tailgate on your spray in bed liner, and still use a tonneau, I woudl suggest the Line-X bed liner since it is thinner and a lot smoother than the Rhino lining.

Message: Ive taken the truck through the car washes. No problems at all. what you want to do is apply a 1 inch strip of closed cell foam ( the kind they put on camper shells. it has a sticky side and can be found at any hardware store.
As for the liner they can all be applied thin. I apply mine at about 1/8- 3/16 thick but I can apply it past 1/4 inch but usually nobody wants it that thick unless they are a construction company and some want it thicker. but Rhino lineX and Vortex can be applied 1/8 inch thick or more
The thickness is up to the buyer

Rob... I'm looking at getting an ARE fiberglass lid. I haven't seen one in person yet, but I would think that it already has some sort of rubber gasket to prevent leakage. I'll be checking into it...

Message: Mine came with it on but Im not sure if the place I got it at put it on or if it came like that from thew factory. I assumed they install that stuff but i dotn know. All i can tell you is that im very happy with the ARE cover
I just wish i bought a camper shell cause sometimes i like to carry bigger stuff but the tonneau is easier to store and to move on and off the truck

Message: Well I got my A.R.E. bed lid (LS II Series) about a month ago, and I really like it. The dealer said that was the first new one he had seen with the new rubber gasket. I guess it helps prevent leaks.
I drove my Dak QC through a car was, and didn't get any leaks, so it looks like its water tight.
Also got a $20 coupon from the A.R.E internet website at:
http://www.4are.com/offers/offers.php
I noticed the bed lid helped with the gas mileage a bit too. :)
Now to save up for the running boards...

Message: TIM...
A.R.E. impressed me. I stopped by the area dealer (Fastlane Truck Accessories in Chesterland, Ohio) on my way home from work on a Monday, ordered the bed lid. The dealer said that ARE ships on Thursday, and mine proabably wouldn't get built and shipped until the next Thursday. But it came in the Thursday after I ordered it, and installed Friday afternoon--just in time for a trip I was taking the following week! I was a real happy!
Fastlane has been great too... I'm looking forward to getting my running boards to complete my DAK QC's look.
That $20 coupon was a bonus surprise too! Thanks A.R.E. for a great product!
