Subject: Gen III rims on a Gen II Dakota?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have just put rims off of an 2000 Dakota (15x8)on a '92 Dakota and have a slight problem. The grease cap on the front hubs sticks out to far and I cannot get the center caps on! I have went to my dealer for suggestions and they could not come up with anything. I have looked long and hard for wheel spacers and none of my local shops or stores carried them, many have said that no one makes them for a dakota. I have cheeked with several companys such as JCwhitney and Summit and they could not find any either. Can any one offer any suggestions? I am not the only one with this problem, another fellow Dakota owner has had this happen to him.

My brother's doing the exact same thing right
now. He's putting the 16X8 wheels off my new
quad cab on his '95 Dakota (I've got a set of
R/T wheels). As far as we've been able to
figure, you have four choices:

1. Leave it alone.

2. Grind 1/4" off the end of the spindle, cut and
shorten the rotor dust cap to fit under the Gen
III rim cap.

3. Use wheel spacers and hardened wheel
studs to move the Gen III wheel out.

4. Machine a new cap for Gen III wheel.

My brother is a pattern maker so he's going to
machine some new caps that will attach to the
factory Gen III wheel center caps via some
small machine screws and/or epoxy. The only
part of the factory center cap he's using is the
plastic "snap ring". He's going to cut the
factory cap to clear the dust/grease cap and
machine an aluminum shell out of some
billet. Hope this helps.

Later,
Lemmers

Jon, I tried that on a 95 2WD and so have others and there was an additional problem with a bolt head on the caliper that rubbed the rim, but a little careful grinding cures that. Is yours 2WD or 4x4?
