Subject: 2002 Dodge Dakota Transmission problem
IP: Logged

Message:
I hae a 2002 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab w/4.7 Engine V-8 multi speeed transmission Auto 45RFE-It has about 3,000 miles on it; ever since we purchased it, occasionally when you start it up, it won't automatically shift up to the n2nd gear until you have let it run slowly for about 3/4 of a mile, then you feel it shift and it is fine. We have taken it to the Dealer, and they advise have never heard of such a thing, they kept it for 2 days and it wouldn't do it with them, they say then can't do anything about it unless it does it when they are driving it. Any suggestions or comments. Thanks CM

Hey 93 venom, there's a thought; but do you know of any other remedy to this problem; that we might be able to explain to the Dodge Garage? Thanks in advance.

I have the same truck as you. I have never experienced the problem you are talking about. So it may just be something with your truck.
My only complaint is that it shifts down to soon when you get passed second. I mean that if I drive like a pappy it tends to shift to early and gets out of the powerband. Making it feel like its lugging to much.

I also have a 2002 SLT QC with the auto. tranny but mine is a 4WD w/the AWD transfer case.
I have had similar problems with the tranny , but the main issue I`m having is (and this happens most often after the truck has been sitting in the garage all night) when I put it into reverse , it feels like the e-brake is on.
When I gas it a bit , it then slowly moves , and after I then put it in drive it sometimes doesn`t want to shift out of first gear until I get to the end of the block.
I haven`t yet taken it in to the dealer because I know I`ll get the run-around for a few days and nothing will be fixed...I have a VERY ...shall I say...unrecommended dealership as far as service goes.

I figure when it goes out , then they will HAVE to fix it.

Two possibilities for you:
1) I have read on this board several times that the transmission is programmed to upshift later when it's cold (can't verify)
2) the first 1/4 mile or so when cold you may be confusing the sound of the clutch fan for first gear. That's about how long it takes for the fluid to spin out of the clutch and disengage after sitting awhile.

Hope that helps.

Carol,i would bet anything its the clutch fan except you say "you feel it shift" and you say it happens "occasionally". maybe the occasion you dont experiance this the truck is warm so the clutch fan doesnt do its roar thing, i dont know. to see you could remove the clutch fan. do a search on this site, theres a trick to loosening the nut holding it on but its no big deal and goes back even easier.

blu4door, i know exactly what you mean. i talked to a dc tech to see if my thermostatic switch set up would screw anything up. (he said it wouldnt) anyway we were talking and he mentioned hypertech, he has it on his 5.9 ram. you can program in bigger tires to change your shift points. unfortunately i have a 03 and hypertech doesnt make one for them yet. when they do i will seriously consider purchase just for a little more aggressive shift.

03 qc 4x4 4.7 auto,3.55 open,180 t-stat,flexalite thermostatic switch,removed clutch fan,koolshot air intake,plat +4 4418s,amsoil.

thanks so much to all who have responded with their comments and suggestions; it helps to know that there are others out there who have experienced the same or like problems. I really love my truck, but its frustrating when the dealership ( and they are highly rated) tells you, they have never heard or had similar complaints. I am also going to e mail the Chrysler headquarters re this and see what they advise. I am hoping that since we have registered the complaint, more than once, with the dealership that it will be covered when the transmission goes completely out, which I have no doubt will happen in time.
Thanks Again. Carol

Just thought I'd chime in on this one.

My '02 does similar things when it's cold.

Mainly the torque converter doesn't lock up until the temp comes up. I'll go 5 or 6 minutes down the interstate before it kicks in.

Works fine after it warms up.

I've been to two Dodge Dealers with the same problem. They said it was fixed but it is the same. When the vehicle is running for awhile and I shift into reverse there is a 1-2 second grinding noise then goes into gear. Both dealers say this is normal the truck has 44,000 and it never has had this noise until last week.

I've heard a shop manager say (while I was waiting for my truck to be fixed) that it was normal for a computer shifting transmission to go into reverse within a second or 2. Another words you have to wait for it to kick in gear.

I had a 02 V8 and tow package. I 100% hated it
when towing my 26' Trail Lite. Yes, left it out
of OD (like you should when pulling such a load)
and the it kept hunting for the right gear to
stay in. Forget about using cruise also.

I sold it and NEVER again will I ever buy another
auto tranny in any name brand truck if I plan to
use it for towing.

You STILL can't beat the older NON COMPUTER
controlled cars and trucks.

Really ? Recently got back from a camping trip with my new 2500 hemi Ram. I would say it beats any older non computer controled truck I've owned or driven for towing hands down. No hunting issues in tow mode. We've seen lots of guys with the 545RFE complain about this, while those of us with 45RFE (older 4.7 4 speed auto) don't have the problem. Maybe we shouldn't condemn all auto trannies just because the 5 speed auto 4.7s hunt when towing ? I couldn't be more satisfied with the new Ram, upgraded at the factory with 4.10 gears for $50 for my intended use. Same 545RFE as you, but with a tow mode.

But anyway Chrysler has never built a 4 speed transmission (auto) that last 3 years while doing HD work...

Now I don't care what people say, but GM builds transmissions that blows them both away.

RadioMan.

GMC Sierra with a 6L80 would be perfect for towing and you can opt for the Vortech 6000 with 4.10 gears.

Really ? I've replaced more GM transmissions than I can remember. Never had to replace a mopar transmission. And I've plowed and towed with both. Take that for whatever it's worth; but why are you trolling a mopar board if that's the way you feel ?

Gerrick Doherty!

You must be a very lonely man when you like to post childish remarks like the one above. Sorry if you're relationship with girl or guy friends just didn't go the way you planed it (or should I feel sorry???? uh no!)

But anyway I agree with Joe. GM has built reliable transmission that actually does hold up. The problem is, there engines and suspensions seem to be in deep question. All the squeaks, pings from the motor and the grunt should for the chassis all points to a GM truck.

But there new 6L80 is the daddy of all transmissions found in any"LIGHT DUTY" duty pick-up truck.
