Subject: bigger tires on NON-big tire package
IP: Logged

Message:
I currently have 235/75/P15's on my 99 Dakota. I have the 5.2l 318 V8 in it. I believe my gear ratio is 3:55. My question is, I want to get the bigger tires, the 31's to be exact, like the big tire package. I have the 4x4 package, minus the bigger tires. The guy at the tire shop told me there may be some side effects, because I don't have the big tires now. He said the tranny has a certain point at which it shifts, and may act funny with bigger tires. If this true, and if so, will it cause damage?? Do I need a computer chip to solve it?? Thanks in advance!

Joe

When I had my 97 Dak CC 4x4 it came with puny tires and those funked out stock wheels. After driving the back streets after dark I decided to upgrade. I found a set of the cool stock wheels and then slapped on some 31x10.5’s. With that upgrade I never noticed any ill effects. Yeah, the speedo was probably off, but I could drive the main drag in the daytime. Now I’m driving a 00 QC 4x4 and upgraded with 16 wheels with a set of 265/70’s. Here again, no ill effects. Neither one of these trucks had the big tire pkg.

I put 31x10.5/15's on a set of 2000 15x8 rims for my 2001 CC. I had to have the pinion ratio reset by the dealer. Same set up as yours. Cost $35.00 for the DRBIII hook up. The speedo will show about 10% under if you have the stock rubber and skinny wheels.

When I had mine done, the day after I bought the tires, the knob of a service manager at my dealership told me DC voids warranties if the pinion ratio is not correctly set because the odometer also reads less then actual by about 10%.

I actually like more the way it runs and shifts with the large tires and I get better gas mileage when highway cruising. I say go for it. I haven't noticed any ill effets.

i have a 4x4 dakota 2000 model. it had 31s and 3.55 gears. i run 33s on it now but hope to find some new 31s cheap to put on it. The 33s are brand new basically but I may be selling the truck so I prefer to have it back to stock look

I doubt you'll notice any shifting problems. My 2000 came with the bigger tires, I found a cheap set of 7" rims to run your size for the winter. I don't notice any shifting or mpg differences between the two sets. I'd recomend 8" rims for the bigger tires, usually about $300 for a set of the factory ones at the swap meets.
