Subject: 4x4 Trans/front end?
IP: Logged

Message:
hello my dad has bought an 89 4x4 dakoda with a 3.9L A500 trans. The trans is not working and if you get under the truck you can turn the front drive shaft coming from the tranfurcase to the front chunk.

So is it post to be this way untell you put it in 4x4? or is the front end out in it?

It does not have out side locking hubs just the shifter in the floor to put it in 4x4.

Thanks for any help. I am trying to save this truck my dads talking about making a trialer out of it and this is a very nice truck to be scrapt out HELP

This sounds normal but I am not 100% sure.

However I can tell you that the A-500 is an expensive transmission to have fixed.... Maybe part out what you can then make your trailer... Is the trailer simply to tow behind another dak? That would be pretty bad-ass...

Yes, you will be able to turn the front drive shaft when it is not in 4wd, there is a gear that turns the drive chain, and the front drive shaft has a gear that is driven by that chain. That gear has a synchro in it like a manual trany that engages to turn the chain, turning the front drive shaft. There is a vacum operated soloniod that moves a shift fork in the front diff tube that splines 2 axles together. You dont have lockers in the front because of the seperated front axles, when you turn the front drive shaft, the spider gears are free to rotate around w/o turning the ring gear.

danny,

You may have a transmission problem, that 'appears' to be manifesting itself as a front end problem. Unless your 4WD is engaged, your front end components should be free-wheeling in respect to the transmission.

Some easy trouble-shooting tha mya help narrow things down:
- Does it happen 'every time' it goes into over-drive?
- Is it only when a certain speed is achieved...ie: 53 mph and above?
- Have you tried keeping it in Drive and taking it up to the same speed(does it do it in Drive as well)?

I don't remember, was ABS offered on `89s? If so, does yours have it on the front? If so, it could be related to that?

Otherwise, I would be taking it to a reputable mechanic at this point. Fixing a paid for vehicle is always cheaper than making monthly payments on a new one.

Good luck!
