Subject: 42RH Transmission Band Adjustment IP: Logged
Message: Recently I decide to do a fluid/filter change for my tranny. It has 170,000 miles on it and like to hop in and out of gear when it was cold, I thought maybe the filter was so clogged up it made it harder for the cold fluid to get through it. However while I had the pan off I attempted to adjust the Reverse/Low Band as the adjustor for it is in the pan. It didn't seem like it went very well as far as following the crappy Haynes manual, seemed like it needed to be turned quite a bit to get the proper torque reading, but it seems like it hooks up a lot better on the street now. My question is what are the repercussions of possibly over-tightening the bands? I figure I've been pretty lucky to make it this many miles with relatively little maintenance on it, but would like to get a timeframe as to how long I have to find another one before this one bombs out if I overtightened them. Thank you in advance....

Message: one of the major things about band adjustments it to get the proper pressure on the drums. too loose and it can start slipping and take some time to go into gear. also, if too tight, you can wear the bands out more quickly and leave a good imprint on the drum itself. did you adjust it with an "INCH LBS. TORQUE WRENCH"?

Message: I started out with an inch pounds torque wrench, but it was a rather cheap one. So I did the conversion to foot/lbs (72 inch/lbs = 6 ft/lbs). It just seemed like I had to turn it quite a bit before I got the right torque reading. I guess I'll see what happens...thx for the input

Message: I adjusted the bands also but can't seem to get it right. I have seen back it off 2 times 3 times and 4 and 3 3/8ths. Seems to be something happening at around 50 or 60 miles doesn't feel like slipping but the noise is like a high rev. Of course the transmission shops say that the bands aren't suppose to be adjusted but the manual says otherwise. A little help here If anyone minds but between 50mph and 60 I get the high rev is that front band or rear band.I would hate to have to drain the transmission again. Thanks! James

Message: Sounds like your cable needs adjusting also. Do you have a check engine light with this problem? I was told by a long time tranny mechanic that if your transmission oil pan has pieces of metal then its major and needs a rebuild. If just a little sludge in the bottom then its probably electical. So my suggestion is to pull the transmission oil pan and inspect whats in the bottom before you spend thousands.

Message: Just a note on your torque wrench. If you used a wrench for ft/lbs and converted to in/lbs, you prolly screwed up :-(
Torque wrenches work most accurately at something within the "middle" of their range. When you take a wrench that covers 8ft/lbs to 75 ft/lbs and use it to set something like 10ft/lbs or 70ft/lbs, it won't be very accurate. No biggie if you are fastening something like a 1/2" bolt, but a tranny band... I dunno.
I'd yank the pan and re-do with a proper in/lbs wrench. But that's just me :-)

Message: I had the same problem with my '92 Dakota with a 42RH. What happens with these is that with the factory valve body, the torque converter doesn't get "pumped up" in park or neutral. What this means is that if you have the slightest torque converter seal leak, the torque converter will bleed down when it sits. TransGo makes a shift kit that fixes this problem, and they give their own, less ambiguous specs for band adjustment. Worked like an absolute dream after I put it in, and shifted much quicker to boot. Of course about 30,000 miles later the torque converter seal only got worse, but as long as you keep fluid in it it's still ok.
I've seen the kit marketed through Pioneer and got it at O'Reilly's auto parts a couple years ago but haven't been able to find it since.

Message: Ooh yeah, worth mentioning I suppose, 6 ft*lbs is the equivalent of 72 in*lbs. The conversion is simply ft*lbs=in*lbs/12, although I would agree with Wally that putting a ft*lbs torque wrench at the bottom of its range would probably reduce its accuracy. Then again, I'm the kind of guy who uses nothing but $25 torque wrenches, in which case it probably doesn't make much difference :)

Message: "I started out with an inch pounds torque wrench, but it was a rather cheap one. So I did the conversion to foot/lbs (72 inch/lbs = 6 ft/lbs)." You can't do this in the low ranges. It's way too inaccurate. You must use an in-lb torque wrench. Your choice - spend $30-$60 for a good tool, or ruin a $2,000 tranny.
"I had the same problem with my '92 Dakota with a 42RH. What happens with these is that with the factory valve body, the torque converter doesn't get "pumped up" in park or neutral." This is not true - the pump does run in neutral.
"i have no reverse! does not back up at all! in reverse it moves forward but with engine off reverse is neutral. drive works great shifts good except it statrs in second" Your shift linkage is screwed up. And with engine off, an automatic will roll in gear. DUH.

Message: Probably your speed sensor. Not very expensive and easy. You will have one in differential and one on the cone of transmission. Screws in and out like a light bulb and will have a wire attached. Unhook wire before removing and re-hook after replacing.
