Subject: Difference between 97 and 99 Dakota AC? IP: Logged
Message: I am very unhappy with my 97 3.9l Dakota's AC system. Actually, it works even less well than my 88 Honda Civics that I retrofitted to 134a, and I was told I would lose a lot of cooling ability by retrofitting the Honda. I noticed a used car buying guide put out by Consumer Reports yesterday, and it gives the 95 Dakota the worst rating for ac, and 96 and 97 Dakotas the second worst rating [half black circle/dot]. However, it gave the 99 Dakota the best rating [full red dot/circle]. Does anyone know what parts are different in these systems [97 versus 99]? After all, if I can retrofit it with 99 parts and it works MUCH better, sign me up! I recharged my system and added leak sealant and had it working fine for about a month. Then, I noticed it not working any more. Don't know if it is the compressor, or a MAJOR leak. I do know my truck has a horrible reputation for the quality of its ac system. If the 99 is so much better I would like to swap anything I can to make mine as efficient. Thanks for any/all input. I will put this on the v6 owners page also, as well as the performance one, as I want the highest exposure possible, to get the most feedback. Thanks again!

Message: the info you are getting has to be biased. the 96 and 97 A/C systems share very few parts as the trucks are built on very different frams and most of the parts such as the condensor are not interchangeable between the two years. The 99 and 97 are for the most part totally interchangeable engine to engine ie the 4.7 parts don't all fit a 3.9 whatever so I don't see how there would be a difference between them. Even the compreesor between my 97 3.9 and my buddies 2001 4.7 are the same. The biggest problem I had with mine is the condensor in front of the radiator had multiple leaks in it BUT it was an aftermarket crash replacement, not a Mopar original. I made a stone sheild out of hardware cloth, it looks like extra heavy duty scren, and that seems to keep it all working. The mechanic at the local dealer thought it was a good idea.
