I think they stopped with the 2000 model year, same year the QC came out.

You also can't get a 4 banger anymore ; )

I'd wait until next year. Better choice of engines and a better frame are supposed to be in the works. If you get anything get the 4.7. The 5.69 and 3.9 are archaic boat anchors.

quit doggin' the 3.9, i get better mileage than most of you (which still isn't great) and i have a club cab with a stereo. i bought it over a year ago and tear the piss out of it daily now has over 74,000 miles and still runs strong. I bought it with just under 51,000 on 2-15 last year and have preceded to tear it up and do all the little mods i can. (don't have mommy or wifey to help me as i'm only 19 years old)

The 3.7 is great...in the Liberty. It's a joke to put anything but an 8 in a truck, especially a heavy one like the Dakota. I know it's a new Mercedes design but it will suck bad like the 3.9 in the Dakota. It would be nice if Dodge got back to the forefront in engine design.

Engines made Dodge great but they haven't made a good engine in 40 years. The 4.7 is alright but it's no great shakes compared to the offerings from Japan and Germany, even if it was designed by Mercedes. My friends with the 4.7 report some mighty strange noises and not too great power versus fuel consumption but it's still better than the 3.9/5.2/5.9.

If it must be a 6 why not an updated Jeep 4.0 inline 6. A modern aluminum twin cam straight 6 would tear the arse out of everything on the road. Or better yet, a blown 4.8 stroker. The new Chevy 4.2 inline 6 is fantastic. Enought to make me think about buying a Trailblazer. Nah, I'd rather lick my own azzhole. Or even better give us a fcuking diesel option for sh1t sake you dumb pin heads in Stuttgart!!!

And sorry biznitch, the 3.9 does suck, especially in the QC. The 3.7 is as smooth as a baby's arse but it's still underpowered and too revvy for the Dakota. Like I said, it's great in the Liberty, would rock in the Wrangler but will suck in the Dak.

I will mever buy anything but a 4.7, and maybe the 5.7 Hemi when it comes out, when my 318 dies. I use my truck for towing and hauling sh1t around, not for "racing" 10 year old riced out Civics driven by zit faced burger flippers/pizza boys. I'm too old/smart/successful for that sh1t. Sorry for the rant, I'm pi$$ed.

C Campbell,

What the H@$$ are you talking about?
You must have some strange character friends that have a 4.7.

It has awesome power, esp. with a REAL transmission, makes NO 'strange' noises, and gets awesome MPG. My 2wd, 5spd, 4.7, QUAD cab, SLT(the heavier one), gets over 20mpg hwy, and that's hailing a$$, with family, luggage, TV playing CD's, and the A/C on. MIxed driving, including hard accellerations, it gets around 17-18mpg, NOT babying it.

Talk to more people berfore you make generalizations about this awesome motor, OK?

Hey dudes, I'm just a visitor. This is going to be my first Dakota, and new vehicle I've ever owned. I ordered the Dakota regular cab sport plus with the Stampede package.4.7 V-8,5-45RFE, anti-lock spin dif. and 3.92 gears. The company I work at has Jeep Ch. for company vehicles.Executives say that the 4.7 is a s**T, gettin, powerful engine. The 4.7 has a more compression ratio than the others. The 5-45RFE is always undergoing engineering changes and upgrades. I should know. I polish one of the many 50 ton die cavity mold dies to make the trans.case. They are no fun, and so is the 30 ton A-500 and A-518 die cavity mold. So, I just hope the grief of polishing them pays off, because now I'll be riding with one!LOL!!

my 03 qc 4.7 auto does make some "strange" noises. the canister leak checker do hickey solenoid thingy on the driver side firewall makes a pencil tapping sound that people swore was valvetrain, turns out its normal. i get a whining esp when cold thats probably ps pump, common as well. i hate that whine. can you put in a rams larger or aftermarket pump, if it got rid of wine i would do it in a secound.

anyway still i still am happy with my truck. and this site has saved my butt, i learned a lot in a little time here.

do you actually have a 3.9? c campbell i think not anyway i said it was a good engine in a club cab not a quad cab whoever thinks a quad could get moving with a six is on crack. my 6 may not be as quick as your 8 but i still have fun in it anyways smoking the occasional shocked vehicle. for me the 3.9 is an all around good motor, decent mileage, power to haul little things if i need to, including my friends ricers to the repair shop! Also reliable, i still haven't done anything other than basic maintenance on it and runs like the day i picked it up!!!!!!

'97 was the last year of the long bed option. Just not popular enough for Dodge to continue making it. Don't know why you woudl want one either.

They are rite, we have not one but TWO, dak quad cabs with v6 in them. Dont ask me but dad bought another one with the same options just differ color and let me drive the old one instead of just gettin me a good used v8 4x4, im stuck with a v6 quad cab. Dont get me wrong its a great truck but its slower than a constupated old guy. gas mileage is great too. nice chic hauler.(yes im only 16 to answer your next question.)
well thats just my 2 cents worth .

97 wasn't the last year of the longbed option, because I have a 1999 long bed. I like it (and would buy another one) because it's great for camping, lots of space. Also, even if space wasn't a factor, I still like the way they look oposed to the short bed.

Hey 3.9 Sh1tzfit,

I said:
"I will never buy anything but a 4.7, and maybe the 5.7 Hemi when it comes out, when my 318 dies."

Re-read my post. You will find I clearly state that I have a 5.2. I had a 3.9 but it sucked. It moves a stock, empty truck fine but if you tow or haul stuff in the bed it's vastly underpowered very fast. You may or may not impress you buddies with your driving prowess while racing in an empty pickup but try loading in a half ton of top soil and tell me what you think of the 3.9 or tow a 22ft bow rider. It can't do it.

You said:

Which explains why I said:

Nuff said about where you fit in to the food chain.

TexasTodd,

My one friend who has a 4.7 Dakota also drives an Olds Aurora. He says the 4.7 is a bit of a pig. Personally I think it's a fine engine but as I don't own one I will defer to his opinion. I think his Aurora is a pig.
