Message: If you can smell a strong odor of coolant, there is a leak. Check all hose connections, check around the water pump especially the weep hole at the bottom of the water pump. Check around the intake manifold. On a hot engine coolant can evaporate before you can see a small leak. Check the thermostat water neck. If you can find nothing, check all the freeze plugs you can. If all else fails have UV dye added to the water. It will show up, if there is a leak. The heater core should smell of coolant with the defrosters on, coolant could show up at the AC water drain. That's about all the places I know to look for an external water leak. Good luck

Message: I have the same problem. I can always smell coolant on the outside of the truck after driving. I have looked up and down and can't find a leak. Nothing drips on the ground, and I never have a problem with overheating. I constantly check my coolant level; every once in a while I have to add some to the resevoir tank, but not to the radiator.

Message: Breezer what you have is a very tiny leak maybe as small as a pin point. The reason you do not see coolant anywhere is the leak is so small that it evaporates before enough can accumulate for you to see it. You might want to try a radiator stop leak compound available at most autoparts stores. follow the directions.

Message: Had the same problem. Checked everything couldn't find a leak. So I took apart water pump, nothing. Then I noticed it was the .....
seal around the thermostat!
For a quick check get a flashlight and look behind the utility shelf. You will see some crusty coolant.

Message: Did you check the By-pass hose off the water pump? I had a leak and that is where is was comming from. It's a 3-4 in piece of hose that cost about 7-8 bucks and you have to remove the A/C and Alt bracket to get to it.

Message: If you have a coolant leak that is too small to reach the ground you probably do not have to replace anything. What you need is a sealant containing sodium silicate. This is without a doubt the best sealant on the market. Where can I get it you ask. That's the good news. Mopar antifreeze already contains it. This is one case where I definitely recommend people buying a replacement fluid from the dealer. If you use Mopar antifreeze and change regularly, you should not develop any leaks unless by physical damage. Well, actually you will, you will just never know about it because the antifreeze will automatically seal it.

Message: I have a 2001 Quadcab 4X4 and noticed the same thing. I thought it was a leak but have since found that it is sloshing out of the overflow on the black reservior/fanshroud. Is anyone else having this problem? I have the 4.7 by the way. It seems to be sloshing out quite a bit.

Message: I had the coolant smell coming thru my air vents inside the cab. Turned out to be a tranny fluid leak that was coming up into the cab vents. Fixed under warranty. That was about 6 months ago, and still get a slight tranny smell when the air conditioning is on. I hope this goes away. I hate everything about a Dodge dealer. I hope Mercedes can fix it all over time.

Message: i get the same smell.... only sometimes when its hot outside after driving my truck. I also have the 4.7 and i had a leak a few months ago b/c BOTH of my hose clamps broke on my lower radiator hose.. I bought new clamps and hasnt leaked since, but i do get a faint coolant smell. I guess i will look for it this weekend when i changed the fluid and put in the 180 Tstat.

Message: I notice a coolant smell when sitting in stop and go traffic and the temp gets to 210. Once I start moving and the temp drops, the smell goes away.
