Message: Here in Pearland TX., I"m a volunteer fireman, and they frown on anything like that. In training, they tell you to do the speed limits, and obey all traffic laws, on the way to the station, etc. It's hard to though, when everyone else, the average person, is speeding and running stop signs, etc.

Message: I'm a retired Toronto fireman, but here in Ontario volunteer firefighters display a flashing green light on the front of their personal vehicles.
All vehicles must yield right of way the same as for flashing red lights on police, fire and ambulance.
Is it not the same in the States ??

Message: In the US, it's different in every state, and a lot of times by department as well. In Connecticut, firefigters use blue lights, 3rd party EMS uses green, and you have to register them through the DMV. They're just courtesy lights, and nobody has to pull over if they don't feel like it. You also have to obey all traffic laws. If you're going to drive like an idiot, don't turn on your light. At least then people won't associate you with the fire department. (I mean that as the general 'you', not specifically pointing at the original poster)
To answer your question, check out www.galls.com. They have a bunch of different brands of lights. They have their own, and Whelens, and some others. I have a Whelen Dash King, which is a blue strobe that suction-cups to your windshield. They're about $120, which is about as cheap as they get. You may be able to get a better price at a local shop though. Galls tends to overcharge a little.
Anyway, just make sure you're in line with your local laws. A blue light is fine in CT, but if you don't remove it and go to North Carolina, you'll get pulled over and fined, just for having it at all. You definitely need to know what the laws are in your state.

Message: First of all, as a volunteer in Texas if your responding to an emergency code 3 you have to use lights & SIREN. And, you are only allowed to drive 10 mph faster than the posted speed limit. I'd also check out your auto insurance or your department to see if they will cover you in the event of an accident. Now to answer your question as to getting some attention. Install a wig wag system for your headlights. You can find a wig wag set up and light bars through Galls or other public safety distributors. I have personally found that with wig wags, a light bar and a good siren, (one where you can change the cadence as you approach an intersection or heavy traffic), helped me for years.
One more thing, you are representing your department every time you drive your vehicle. Whether you’re going to the store or going to a call. The last thing you want to do it bring negative attention to your department and the service it provides for your community.

Message: I have to agree with BlkDakDave. Head light flashers move a lot of traffic. Now that it is leagal in CT. I had them in my 88 dak along with a 6 head strobe pack with the front marker and tail lights strobed along with an L.E.D signail Master. I've got all but theheadlight flasher in my 98. I'm ordering the galls multi-flash pattern unit that plugs into the existing wiring harness. That way I don't have to cut and splice. I do have to say that puting the strobes into my 98 was a pain in the A$$ it took my dad and I 6 hours to do and it only took 3 for my 88. Thats my 2 cents

Message: Couldn't agree more with the other posts here. Check your state laws regarding use of lighting, i.e. what's legal and whats not. Here in PA, laws are very restrictive for volunteers... blue lights and ONLY blue lights, no amber, clear, and definetly not headlight flashers. Plus, we're only allowed two flashing or revolvoing lights, so no full size light bars. Only chiefs and asst. chiefs can run red lights and sirens.

Message: I'm a fan of hide-a-way strobes in the headlights, although wig wags work as well. Here in MI, we can use red and white lights, and I run clear storbes in the headlights and tail lights. If you get strobes, get at least a 90 watt power pack, Whelen is the best. Storbes and More off of ebay sells a nice kit that is cheap or buy from galls, they have a five year warranty. Any more questions, just ask!

Message: Thanks for all the posts fellas. I live in a pretty small community in the winter, (less than 1000 people) but the summer time the population jumps to about 15,000 in a given day. Our laws are really loose in our town, the state is a different story. We can use red and clear lights on our personal trucks, and we're all covered under a blanket insurance thought the FD. The reason I want the lights is not because I go rediculously fast, its just to make the "la la land tourists" a little more aware, but at the same time I don't want to spend tons of money. So maybe the dash light might be the answer, but anyone know prices on strobes and or wig wags in the head light? Thanks

This is an awsome price for a strobe kit an is the same one that I have. Whelen is the best and it's a 90 watt power supply. Other than that you can go to www.galls.com and check out their lights. Wig wags are pretty cheap.
Like I said, I use strobes and they clear traffic pretty well. I also have a mini strobe bar on my truck.

Message: I also am a volunteer from Michigan. I run a Federal Streethawk w/ LED's in the takedowns. I also have installed 8 hideaway strobes in the headlights, blinkers, taillights, and on the frame rail. Just got truck back from body shop. Competition Yellow w/ red flames looks sweet will post pic's. Think of this. Lighting is not just for driving 100mph most of the time you are sitting along a road or working in a road. Do you want the people driving 70mph to see you 1/2 mile before or 200 ft. before they get to you.

Message: I'm a vol. fireman in Crown Point,Indian. We use blue lights and wig wag systems also. I ordered a wig wag kit and strobes for my truck about a year ago from galls. When I went to do the install I seen a notice on the box saying DO NOT install in 98 and newer dodge dakota/durango, doing so may cause severe electrical system damage. So needless to say since the dept. will not pay for my damages, I returned it. Just my two cents.

Message: 01quadcab4x4 is correct. You cannot install a standard wig wag headlight flasher on a late model Dakota. It will fry the control module. There is a special "isolated" headlight flasher on the market that will work with the Dakota/ Durango. It costs about $85.00. If you are interested, let me know and I will send you the information.
