Subject: Clicking sound During Accel IP: Logged
Message: I have had no problems from when I first got my Dak. But just recently I have noticed a clicking sound from my engine during acceleration from a stop. I have a 98 4cyl(Yes I know that sucks. No Jokes please!) 5spd, normal cab. The only posibility that I could think of was my throttle body? I have a Cold Air intake filter right on the TB.I also have flowmaster exaust and cat. It never started until about 5 months after my cold air filter and exaust was installed though. It's not very loud but it is concerning to me. It kinda sounds like the clicking on a new gas stove when the burner is set to ignight. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Message: I'm not sure that it's an exaust leak because it is only when the engine is cold. Although it is coming from the front. I wonder if it only does it when its cold because the metal then swells to fill the leak in, when it becomes hot? I should be able to take it in and have it checked out by Big Bear Muffler hear in my town. They installed the cat back exaust and should be able to determine wheather or not it was because of the upgrade. Either way. The rest of the truck is still on warranty from the dealer I bought it from. But I figured that I would have no mechanicle errors untile My warranty ran out at 75 grand. Oh well... I guess I might be able to use the warranty I'm paying $20 extra a month for. If it requires just changing the header gasket I think I'll do it myself though. If anyone has anymore thoughts, I'm open to suggestions. Thanks for your intuition thus far.

Message: That would make a whole lot more sense. It's pretty sad that I never noticed that. My parents filled my truck with gas when they used it. Knowing my dad with the gas prices at about 1.98 for 91 octane he put the 89 crap in there. That would also make sense why it does that when its cold; and just recently...
Thanks alot AmethystDak, I think you nailed the problem.

Message: Okay... I thought I had the answer, but I have changed back to 91oct and I am still having the same problem when my truck is cold. I can hear it really well when at low rpms, but my exaust drownds it out at high. It does pick up frequency when I gain rpm though. Has anyone ever heard this before?

Message: You were right about the exhaust leak. I had the same problem with my 2.5L, and only when cold. For me it was the exhaust maniford bolts were loose and the gasket was gone. Most likley that is what it is. After I fixed that it sounded like new.

Message: Thanks I'll check my exhaust manifold bolts to see if their tight enough. And I'll check my gasket at the same time. Would you happen to know the ft/lbs of torque specified for the manifold? I havn't gottem my chiltons manual yet.
