Message: I have a 2002 Dakota with fron disk rear drum..and does anyone have the same truck. And does anyone have problems with their brakes..like i only have 20,000 on my truck and the brakes are already messed i think! When i brake..i feel them in the pedal. And anyone have the same problem that all dakotas i think have. U really have to press down on the brake pedal for braking? Just wondering....

Message: Dan,
If you're not too mechanically fluent, I'd recommend you take your rig to a good brake shop for a look-see.
Brakes working well is a good thing, brakes working poorly is a BAD thing-not only for you but those aroud you. If you have to apply significant pressure to make the brakes work, it might be an issue with overly hard pads, rear brakes being out of adjustment or low brake fluid level.
If you feel a 'pulsation' in the brakes when you apply them, it might be warped rotors. Warped rotors typically are annoying but not overly dangerous. It can happen from anything from faulty metallurgy in the rotors to dramatic overheating from 'brake abuse'.
I've got a '00 QC with 5.9, 4wd and now 22,000 miles. I noticed not-as-good-as-I-liked braking from the day I bought it, and have had to keep in mind I'm tooling around in almost 2-1/4 TONS of truck. It doesn't stop, nor will it corner the way my Jag XJS did. It is a heavy rig. Different rotors, pads and shoes may help your braking system.
I've seen PowerSlots and Raybestos QC pads as being a popular and good performing adder. Prices for the rotors, from performance catalogues, run +/- $160/set, and pads some more dollars.
With only 20,000 miles, though, I'd get with a mechanic I trust to check out the system. Go to a couple or three national shops (Misas, Firestone, &tc.), regional shops (PEP BOYS, Les Schuab, &tc.) or recommended small local shops and get a written estimate for what they say is the problem and the cost of repairs.
Don't pay for something not necessary-turning the rear drums or replacing a part not broken.
I expect your problem may not be as nasty to resolve as you may think,...Doc

Message: Dan,
FIRST thing to do is manually adjust your rear brakes, or have it done. The autoadjusters do NOT do the job. I did it to mine (finally)after being dissatisfied with the braking for about 8 months, and it's been like a different truck ever since. Simple and cheap. (and, if they're way out of adjustment, the fronts are doing all the stopping, which is very bad for them!)
