I was thinking of grinding the rivets off the upper control arm ball joint and get good hard bolts to bolt a new on one? Anyone done this? Please let me know.

Drill them out. Start with a small bit and go to a larger size till you get about the size of the rivet hole. You only need to drill deep enough through the head to clear the A arm hole. Then take a chisel and cut the head off. Good luck.
