Just a hair past the 100 mph mark... kaBOOM!

The right front tire on my DAK exploded. Louder than I thought possible, I was truly amazed when I still had total control of the steering. It made a lot of noise, and when the entire tread seperated from the sidewall, it banged around enough to F up my inner fender.

The real suprize was that there was ZERO rim damage. The sidewalls (what was left of 'em) actually stayed glued to the rim and kept it from being assaulted by the asphalt.

Now the real question is... why d'ya thing the tire seperated? It's a Pirelli Scorpion Zero (255/55/18) and I'm pretty sure that it should be able to sustain 100 mph for a few seconds.

Oh well... I didn't like the way they were wearing, anyway... especially for the $$$$. Guess I'll try the Kumho Exta STX.

Dude, that is scary. I think those are rated to 149. When's the last time you checked your air pressure? What was it at?

Was the tire underinflated by chance? Underinflation can cause the tire to overheat and fail as you saw. You could also have hit some debris that you didn't see. Lots of possibilities there.

Scorpion Zero is 150 MPH rated (V)...and there are literally hundreds of variables that could have caused the problem. Glad you were able to "pull" out of the high speed blow out though (with minimal damage).
