Subject: Need help with replacing serpentine belt IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2K QC with the 5.9L engine and see that the serpentine belt, which runs all the accessories, has multiple cracks in it and probably will break soon unless it's replaced. Does anyone have any details on how to replace it, and what needs replaced along with it? Should the idler/tensioner pulleys be replaced with it? Anything else? I'd especially like some tricks in doing it right. If anyone can lay out the instructions for me or point me to somewhere online that has the instructions, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Kris

Message: The idler pulley has a large nut on it. Turn it counter clockwise with a large ratchet, this loosens the tension on the belt-it's spring loaded. slip it off and replace.
Hope this helps

Message: Excellent! This sounds pretty straight-forward now. Should anything else be replaced at this time?
Thanks.

Message: Nope. That will do it. What I have found to be easiest is when putting the new belt on get it around all of the pulleys except for one of the top ones ( I usually do alternator), then using the wrench loosten the tensioner pulley with your left hand and using your right hand get it over the alternator pulley.

Message: I finished this yesterday in about 1/2 hour! What a piece of cake. And, yes, it helps to do it just as Chris suggested by loosening the tensioner pulley and looping the belt around the alternator last. One doesn't even need to remove the fan shroud to get this job done. However, when removing the old belt, I should have held my wrench farther clockwise on the bolt of the tensioner than what I did. As it was, my wrench butted up agains the hard pipes on the passenger side and wedged themselves there. I had to play with that for about 5 minutes before getting the wrench off the bolt of the tensioner...
Thanks for the help. It was perfect.
