Subject: Longer Life Tranny - Auto or Manual IP: Logged
Message: What is everyones opinion on which tranny, Auto vs. Manual, is more durable and is more capable of lasting the life of the vehicle. It seems that the Auto might have the edge since it has a filter for the fluid, shifts smoother between gears and sometimes even comes with a Tranny cooler, but i could be wrong. I would like to here others opinions on which Tranny is a more durable, longer life tranny

Message: I'd much rather have a stick than an auto for many reasons... My $.02
1) Less regular maintenance is big. Fresh fluid is a must for an auto, and I have a hard time keeping up with the mfgr's maintenance desires. I too often leave the oil in longer than I should and guess what happens?
2) Next is the weight rating and longevity for towing. Towing or just running with heavy loads generates more heat. Heat is a bad thing for the tranny oil, and then it messes up the precision machinery.
3) Simplicity. Today's auto trannies are a complicated mix of electronics, mechanical and fluid dynamics. Way too many things to go wrong.
4) Let's not forget my subjective favorite: the fun factor of shifting is way high up there. Yes, there are times I would rather not work at driving. For those times I drive my wife's Avalon.
Unless you get a bad manual tranny, or don't shift it good you'll most likely never need to pay any attention to it. The occasional oil change is all that needs to be done.
My maintenance schedule mentions nothing about changing the oil, the New Venture Gear web site says it is a lifetime lube, and I have not gotten a good answer from my questions at the Dodge dealers I have spoken with. I'm not completely sold on the "lifetime" oil in my 2002's tranny.

Message: Thanks for the replys. I understand that the manual tranny is alot simpler than todays Auto, but it seems funny that a manual with a so called "Lifetime Lube" in it can out last an Auto that gets fresh fluid changes, has a fluid filter, and can come with an oil cooler. Also to add to youre maintence cost, you will eventually have to get a new clutch in the manual which can cost a pretty penny with the 4x4. The reason i am asking this is because i am soon gonna be buying a new Dak that i plan to keep until it dies and i am trying to decide on which would be the better tranny to get.

Message: plan that the maintence costs of each equal each other out, 24k flush and fluid change on the auto OR maybe 1-2 times cahnge the fluid on the manual and change a clutch....
but also remember the manual is more fun, gets better mileage, etc... Myself I like shifting gears. I went standard...
