I have a 92 Dakota with 142k on the clock and suspension.

When I turn left and apply the brakes, I can hear a small grinding sound. This isn't noticeable when turning right or going straight and applying brakes.

If I am not applying brakes, I can turn in all directions without hearing the sound.

The pads and rotors are in good shape. Could this be the ball joints or berings?

TIA!
MAtt

Maybe the wheel bearings? Try jacking up the front wheels and rotating them by hand to see if you feel anything strange. You may want to remove the tire to do this, listen carefully and maybe even try turning the wheel in that direction. While you are under there try to find any play in any of the joints by manhandling it.

Just a couple thoughts of what I would start with for diagnosis.

You shouldn't have cv shafts....unless 4x4. To check your wheel bearings and ball joints jack your truck up and "wiggle" your wheel. If there is any play at all then something is worn. It's sounding more like bearings to me. Ball joints will make a clunking sound when ya hit bumps. Hope this helps........ BTW i think the bearings are gunna be expensive..... :(

I picked up the outer bearings last night. The inner ones are pressed on so I hope they are ok. I'll know on inspection...

They were $8.99 a side. Not too bad. I also bought a tin of semi-syntetic lube for just over $3. I just hope this is the problem.

There hasn't been any clunks going over bumps.
