We have a 2002 Dakota 5-speed. Last week after getting stuck in a snow drift, we released the clutch and tryed to go with the emergency brake set. Apparently, this totally blows out your back brake system. They want $1200 to fix it. Anybody else have this problem, they tell me there are several Dodge's in the shop now with the same problem. I filed a complaint with the NHTSA, it seems like this should be a manufacturer defect.

Don't tell me you've never forgot to release the emergency brake before trying to go, everyone has! The point is, that should not cause this amount of damage.

Hi again Lisa,

I see your point.

I have a 5 spd Dak, 2001 Quad, anyway, I'm sure there have been times I have left it on and tried to start off.

Perhaps the damage resulted in applying a lot of torque, having just been stuck, and it damaged the rear brakes.

AND, I AGREE, it should NOT have happened-the damage I mean. It will be interesting to see if it's happened to anyone else.

It's under warranty, complain until they repair it, call your district rep. for Dodge, etc.

Good luck,

PS-my wife drives a standard-5 spd, in both of our cars too.

So did the brake stay on or did you forget to release it???

Anyway, I had something simmilar happen after having my brkes bled at sears a few years back. They bled them and the drums were dragging, after getting home (after 15 miles of highway) the drums were glowing red and the following had to be replaced since I boiled the fluid:

Drums, shoes, brake pisons, soft lines, master cylinder... it came out to over $1200.... all this from a free brake bleed... And Sears coughed up the $$ to fix it...

Thanks so much for the advise. My husband just talked to a guy at Dodge Customer Relations. They say they won't cover it under warranty. Aren't the brakes part of the drive train and therefore covered for 70,000 miles? This is very frustrating. I'm going to check out the Crysler websit next.

Sorry, but parts that are ging to wear, clutches, shockls, breakes are only covered for 12k miles from the factory. Talk about an expensive lesson when I cracked the hub on my clutch at 32,500 miles and had to pay over $700 for it to be fixed... And I had already bought an extended warranty too... But that is how it goes ya know...

Larry, when the clutch leaves you stranded at the grocery store, will not engage any gear, and you do not have the time or space to do it yourself for at least a couple of weeks, you would pay to have it done as well. WTF right back at ya.

Most of you have had very useful information, thank you. However Larry, somehow I doubt you've ever driven a 5-speed, cause anyone who has, has left their brake on. I must say, if you don't have anything useful to contribute, stay off the line.

whats that u dumb hoe? ive only driven manual's since i was 16. who calls it 5-speed? im asking b/c my 2 previous cars where 6-speed bit*ch, not 5-speed, how the hell do u refer to manual trannys as 5-speed only? my brother has a 3-speed GTO and my friend has a custom 7-speed talon GSX. so know what your talkin about first. and those 2 people have never left their parking brakes on! what the hell do u mean everybody leaves them on? did u take some god damn survey of all the manual drivers on earth? your just some stuck up hoe that doesnt know how to drive a stick! u blew out the back brake system??? umm who the hell calls it that? its called the rear drums and brake lines white trash. it should be a manufacters defect?? hmmm thats hard to prove since IT WAS YOUR FAULT IT HAPPENED, it didnt break on the highway while you were crusin, it broke when your dakota was in a stressed position and u panicked. and if u cant fix it yourself (like that bastard with the 700 clutch fix) then go on the corner, make some money and pay someone to fix it b/c the DC aint going to cover what stupid people do. AND THERE IS A BRAKE LIGHT ON THE DAMN GAUGE OVERLAY- WHY DIDNT U SEE THAT? EVERYTIME U START A CAR YOU SHOULD LOOK AT ALLLLL THE GAUGES TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE CORRECT- hmm this is how i never driven with the brake on b/c im not a moron like yourself. my 2 cents

Larrry,

There is no reason to flame anyone based on what they say on this site. If you have not noticed if you do not flame you do not get flamed, it is that simple. I am not going to continue any further as you are not worth the time.

Going forward please do not flame others for thier mistakes/concerns/beliefs/etc. as all that does it take value away from this wonderful resource.

Lisa,

very few are like this, post here anytime, many people will be glad to help. If someone, cowardly thru an internet site, ripped MY wife like that, I'd be really pissed!

Well now,

I've been busier than I can explain the past few weeks, I haven't checked up on this site in almost a month. But coming back here now, its good to see there are still immature idiots flaming people because they can. Lisa, don't let a few change your opinion of this webiste; it is very helpful.

Now, straying off topic and doing what I complain that others should do...

And Larry, you must be a real bad ass ehh? Takes a tough guy to rip someone on an internet site. All the people I know around here have 5-speed trannys and call them just that, as do I. I have left my parking brake on before by accident (never for long though.) Sh#t happens. Now we know you're a bad-ass; perhaps you have something to say to me??? Get a life.

It was just a couple of feet before my husband realized it was on. I just wonder how well the Dakota is put together for something like this to cause so much damage. Thanks for all your support and advise. Bad things just happen. I do find it amusing though, that my husbands big bad truck gets broken so easily, and my little Honda is old reliable.

Lisa,
Is the hubby dealing with a honest shop?
There are shops that will take advantage of you
if you let them. Not knowing what's what you could be getting the fair shake, then again
they saw ya coming. Before I would be spending $1200. I would be wanting word for word, the who what and where. I work on Dodge vehicles at a Dodge dealer and have seen "ONE" Jeep Wrangler that had really severe damage to the rear drum brakes and the owner wasn't saying what happened to get them that way. This includes fleet and rental cars so I'm thinking the Dak you have might be a one only situation. I'm sitting here thinking what it would take to do big dollar damage to the brakes and all I can come up with is "Boy the E'brake must've been set REALLY tight". Let us (the forum) know the low down.
Keep it shiny side up! Danny

Well when the ebrake is on and you try to go there is gonna be hesitation.. did he not realize there was hesitation and just hammer on it to move.. i mean come on.. sure d/c has good warrentys but they arent gonna replace something at users fault.. and all the componets are built well but for stuff like leaving the ebrake on and driving.. well i dont think other vehicles out there will hold up to it too much.. ,, rear wheel drive.. when those wheels are locked by brakes.. then forced to move.. something has to give.. its gonna break every time if you do it.. so dont get mad if d/c wont replace it.. not thier fault you left the ebrake on..

But ya know, I forgot my brake on this mornign at first as well, I have never noticed that these e-brakes do too much to hold the truck in place, once I push in the clutch to start my truck usually rolls a bit until the brake gets a grip I guess. And this is on a slight incline, most people would consider it to be flat actually. It happens to all of us but that does seem awful strange to cause that much damage from something all of us do (well except the all-mighty larrry)....

I agree, try another shop... But when it happened were there any pops or anything like that? On the estimate did they tell you what they were going to replace? Drum brakes are relatively cheap, all the parts can be procured to rebuild / replace these brakes for probably $400 so then they want a 50% mark-up and $600 in labor. Look around....

anyone else's parking brake not work well on a steep hill facing upwards??? Mine will not hold my truck if I'm on a relatively steep hill facing upwards. It sucks becuase if I'm stopped in that position and need to get out of the truck or whatever, I have to shut it off and put it in gear to hold it there.

H A N D if it was me, i wouldnt spend the 1200 on stock replacments. why not get a brake disc conversion kit for about 600-800 dollars. or spend a lil more on a viper disc system (if u can find that)this way u will have 4 wheel disc brakes and the dak wont "nose dive" under heavy braking like they do with the stock setup, oh yea new 03' daks come optional with 4 wheel discs. Lisa first of all I have over 30 years of driving multispeed manual transmissions, two, brakes are not a part of the driveline, the driveline makes the wheels on the bus go round and round , not stop stop stop, but are a wear item same as a clutch is. Three,It was your or your husbands mistake that the brakes are ruined not Daimler Chrysler, so my best advice is to chalk it up to experience and go to your local Midas or Tuffy dealer and get the work done there, Mostly they are reliable for brake work and can do it cheaper than your Dodge dealer will. plus they warrant the brake pads or linings for as long as you own the vehicle, not even Dodge as you found out will do that, but when it comes to drums and disks thats another story.
