Subject: Why 1 yr oil change

I was just wondering what exactly is the reason for changing out the oil in a 1 year time frame? I'm just curious. My mother-in-law only puts on her dak about 4k a year. She is running the 5w-30 Amsoil. I know that the oil is still way good. I understand that her driving, which is mostly around town stop and go and occational highway runs isn't very stressing on the oil and the fact of condensation is the biggest factor. Is the 1 year just a good calender interval to go by? Any reason the interval couldn't be extended since the mileage is so low? I'm just curious.

Thanks

I currently maintain 5 vehicles, 3 of these vehicles rarely go over 5K miles per year. I always use synthetic oil (like you I use Amsoil) and very good quality filters (also Amsoil). When I drive these vehicles it's usually for greater than 10 miles and I have been changing the oil once a year with no problems for years. On my old pickup truck, I've been known to go two years between changes, no problem-o and 189k miles. I would not do this with conventional dino oil, only the best synthetic.

Oil actually turns acidic with time that is why the normally accepted interval is 3 months or 3000 miles...

Chris- Don't throw good oil away. The idea of 3k mile oil changes is gone with the dinosaur (dino oil- get the joke). Car manufacturers are now recommending changes starting at 5k and as long as 15k. European oils are better formulated and their recommendation is as high as 20-25k miles between changes. I know cause I lived there. Maybe that is why Amsoil has a 25k mile oil- better formulated ????

Also, If you live in a moderate climate that doesn't get too cold, you could more easily get away with a 2 year interval with low mileage driving.

I guess my thing is that oil and a filter are cheap ($5 filter, $8 oil) and then to change it is only about 40 minutes including set-up and take-down after. So for these reasons I continue to change my oil every 3k ( I drive hard too)... but to me it is cheap insurance...

3000 Mile Oil Change Myth

The necessity of changing your cars motor oil every 3,000 miles is in my opinon (and many others engineers in the industry) ... a MYTH. It is true however that it doesn't HURT to change your oil every 3k miles, you just dont need to. I do believe that a premium synthetic oil can last for 6k miles or more. Many more miles with one of the superior synthetic oils.

Oil Companies and quick lube operations are the ones that like you to think that 3k mile oil changes are needed. Why you ask? Because they will sell more oil! How much longer are we going to make the Arab states richer by wasting or throwing away good oil.

One of the leading quick oil change operations ... Jiffy Lube ... estimates that if they continued to push the 3k mile oil change, and they increased business by just one oil change per day (per shop) in their system, that's an extra $33 million in annual revenue.

Of course, since Jiffy Lube is owned by Pennzoil-Quaker State, it should be of no surprise that what benefits Jiffy Lube benefits their bottom line. Pennzoil-Quaker State's bottom line is directly affected by how well Jiffy Lube promotes the 3k mile oil change.

I do not disagree that it is not neccesary, but I do not that I like when I change my wife's oil and it comes out ratehr clean and when i change mine it is dark but still has a lot of "body" left to it. I put 25-30k miles a year on each of my 2 vehicles and I want both to last as long as possible (at least until paid or I can break even on a trade) so that is why I change so often. I know it is not needed. Heck the FSM reccomends only every 7500 miles...

I just change it that often because Oil is the life of the engine. I have been putting about 3000 miles per month though. Gets a little expensive, but I feel it's worth it in the long run. If nothing else, just change it when the oil starts looking black.

I am right on par with Chis.
I drive hard, fast and in a lot of dirt.
I have yet to change my oil after 3k that it wasn't black.
I used synthitics for a while and I would change the filter and top off the oil.. but the oil was so black.
I didn't feel that it was the best solution for longevity.
I use valvoline every 3k and call it good.

Why cause if it's good enough for John Force it's good enough for me!

Henry, I would suggest that you have a sample of the oil analized first to find out the condition of the oil. It sounds like she may be able to go much further between changes. Only concern is- does she drive it long enough to burn off the condensation? If you think so, get an oil analysis. Only then are you really going to know the condition of the oil. It costs about 20.-25.00 depending on who does it. Some of the labs are :Blackstone Labs, Dyson Labs. You could also ask our Amzoil Board Sponsor, Steve Roark, I sure he could suggest someone for you.

You would have to pay me to change the oil more often then every 6 months with a decent synthetic and filter. I am still useing Mobil-1 for my engine oil because local Amsoil distributor went out of business. I have Amsoil and Redline synthetics in everything else on the vechile. If it is hwy miles I leave it alone for at least 10,000 miles if it is around town then 7500 miles. Once I get the bypass oil filter and foam air filter I am not going to bat an eye at once a year oil changes. There is nothing wrong with early oil changes obviously but it just is not needed if a good synthetic and filter are used. I use to change my dino at 1800-2500 miles all the time Castrol GTX 20W50 in the warm months 10W30 dureing winter. The engine wiped clean with a few shop towels. I tore into the engine at 80,000 to blue print it for raceing. The machine shop thought I had brought them an unassembled OEM factory block. They all but called me a liar when I told them it had 80,000 miles on it. While this is great protection I could have had the same protection and anti-wear changing every 7000-10,000 miles or longer with good synthetics like Amsoil, Mobil-1, Redline, Neo......It is also chaeper in the long run to use good foam air filter, bypass oil filter system, and synthetic oil. I have no vested interest in any one oil company. I actualy like the Trasko Bypass filter system better then Amsoils. The Trasko is cheaper the Amsoil system and more versatile(sp) interms of mounting then amsoil's system. Amsoil has afordable foam filters for most all aplications and amsoil has an oil that is designed for extended drain! I have never seen an engine run on dino oil go past 300,000 miles and still be in good working order. I have seen alot of vechiles with synthetic oil go well past 300,000 and still be in good working order. Dino oils are lucky if they can get you to 150,000 miles with out smokeing and dieseling like crazy assumeing we exclude import engines. The bigest area of concern is the rings, oil pump and cam. Bearing have an almost indefinate life span if the fluids are kept clean and you do not overload them, valve guides wear at close to same rate requardless of type of oil only ash content is determining factor for guides, cams, rings and oil pumps life span can easily be doubled or trippled with good synthetic oil. A side benifit to syntetics is that you seals should stay close to perfect for the life of the vechile.
