Subject: Draw-Tite Hitch Install ??? IP: Logged
Message: Howdy yall,
Just wondering if anyone out there has installed your own draw-tite hitch, and if so, which one did you install and did you run into anything out of the ordinary? How about a wiring kit recommendation?
I'm going to be pulling a large camper.
Thanks guys!

Message: Can't help with the hitch install, but I have a comment or two on the wiring.
Get the Chrysler wiring harness!!!
Damn dealership added an after-market trailer wiring harness when I got the truck and it is ALREADY corroded and trying to melt the taillight wiring on the right side. not to mention the right marker light is no longer working.
This time I'm gonna believe the dealer mechanic. Stick with factory or you might pay for it later.
(The dealer farmed-out the hitch install initially, so I'm going to either accept another after-market harness on warranty, or pay through the nose to have the factory harness added.)

Message: I installed a class 4 draw-tite on my ‘02 quad cab. I bought the no drill hitch and had no hang ups, everything fit perfect. Also bought wiring harness from draw-tite and it has worked flawless for 1 year so far. Here's where I bought my hitch. http://www.drawtite-hitches.com/

Message: wired it in myself without using a pre-formed add in harness, to a commercial quality add on trailer-vehicle adapter plug system, still workin fine after 6 and a half years. Bought it and a spool of hookup wire at the local camper dealer for around 25 bucks. I used crimp type slices from an electrical supply house.

Message: I pull around 4,000 lbs when my 20 flat trailer is full with 4 quads, gas and all the gear. I have the same 5.2L, 3.55 but with 33's and I really want 4.10's to help on the hills. I want to get a toy box but it might max out my truck. With my 33's I have a corrected gear ratio of 3.33, which sucks! My truck is rated to pull 9,200 lbs with 31's. I am guessing a full loaded trailer will weigh around 8,000 lbs. If I get 4.10's I will be able to pull any 20'-24' toy box that weighs less than 10,000 lbs. Empty they are around 4,500 lbs but water and gas are around 7 lbs/gallon. I would try to have a trailer that is only 75% of your maximun weight or less so you could still pass trucks.

Message: N Dakota,
Do you have a manual tranny, -hope so, BECAUSE,
just because you put a hitch back there, and wire a connector, DOESN'T match the factory trailer towing package.
Yes, you cam do it, BUT, with the auto, the clutches in the tranny work MUCH harder, get MUCH hotter, And you eventually burn up the tranny.
DO your self a favor and also get a good tranny cooler.
YOu may have already knew this, but you didn't add it, so I thought I'd mention it.
MY 01 Quad also came with beefier (larger) rear brakes, a higher output alternator, LARGER battery, electric brake wired in the 7 point harness, etc.
Good luck, if you're going to tow much anything, anywhere, the factory towing package is a must!

Message: Texas Todd,
Thanks for the info...I have an auto, but I have the HD Cooling package. No tow package unfortunately, but the tranny has a cooler, and I have adjusted the TV cable to firm up the shifts so the clutch packs shouldn't have to work as hard. I'm also switching to Amsoil tranny fluid before pulling anything.
Anyone know about the cost for the wiring from the factory?

Message: ND,
Sounds as though you'll be OK.
I think someone posted about a factory harness that can be wired in your self, maybe someone who knows something will chime in.
Good Luck! Enjoy!

Message: My wiring harness did not say mopar but it was about $20-$30.
your turn signal wires are on plugs and the wiring harness plugs right in as a pass through.
5 minute or less install.
Only problem I had was the incorrect harness first go around.
the turn signal has 4 wires and the harness only pinned out 3. after correct part all is good.
good luck

Message: Took the Dak into the shop to get the harness replaced. Took them 3 days to get the right one.
Picked it up last night and now, not only is there no marker light on that side, but the directional/brake light isn't working.
Took it back today and I think I'm gonna demand they at least pay for a tank of gas. This is getting rediculous!

Message: You can buy the harnesses from any auto parts store I've seen them there, I myself prefer the round 6 connector but that's just me, also depending on how much you're pulling trailer brakes may be a good idea, we've got one of the compression type brake systems on our boat trailer and it's great.

Message: Perpetrate,
How do you figure that you can pull 9000lbs in a truck that can only safely pull a max of 6600lbs? You are going to do some serious damage to your truck if you are really pulling that much.

Message: Sorry Gentleman,
I went TEC, Truck equipment Co. and bought a drawtite and a harness, It might have been a drawtite. I don't remember. I also bought an adapter for a 6pin round. The thing that I do remember is giving them the year make a module of my vehicle and them giving me a part that was not pinned out correctly. That was more the intesion of my post. Make sure the part is correct. mine fit perfectly but was not pinned out for all 4 wires.
