Message: It's just a $50 fine in SC...
We lost 3 cousins this year on the same day, that were involved in an accident with them riding in the back of a Nissan.
They were all under 16, and brothers. The other boys that were in the truck were lucky.
I used to ride back in the back all the time when I was younger, but looking back at some of the folks that were driving when I did it, makes me thank God I'm still alive.

Message: Texas: age of 17, and with ur ass on the floor. this was told to me by a cop... i know cause i was pulled over for this. he let me go with a warning, but whatever. Like it makes a difference 17 - 16 .. wtf? at 70 mph, they'll both be dead. My two cents.
Paul
ps-sorry for the state switch

Message: In Florida you just have to be sitting on the floor of the bed. After that it ride at your own risk. We've got so Many migrant workers down here any "real" law would be hard to enforce. Especially when the people you are enforcing against can't speak english.

Message: FOr TX, I think Dkax01 is correct.
I have a cab high Leer shell, and ofter put pillows, and padding in there to make it a real nice place to ride, out of the wind/weather, etc. It's got side slider widows, with a screen, a 12V power outlet for a DVD TV, and a pass thru window to my Quad Cab, knda looks like astretched Durango! It's real nice.
Anyway, I also asked about the law in TX., and they cop I spoke to said it DOESN'T change if you're uner the enclosed shell, still can't be a minor (under 17)! Go figure, but I can see why. I still let my wife and two year old ride back there on trips some.

Message: Laws about a speed are pretty funny, but I guess they do lower the risk in a MVA (motor vehicle Accident)
But you could look at like this:
35 and under - Live
over 35 - Die

Message: I have a lawn service and my guys like to sit on the mowers (which are on the trailer) but only when we are on small neighborhood roads and going from house to house. One time I forgot he was back there and decided that i needed gas right away and drove out on the bouncy hilly road. I turned out of the neighborhood and got going about 50 in a hurried fashion. Looked up into the rear view mirror and saw him, he was holding on for dear life with both hands and his face looked like he was on a roller coaster. I stopped right in the road and let him in the truck. I felt really bad about it but it was funny as hell.

Message: I wouldn't recommend it at any speed. I lived through my experience. A dirt road in PA with many curves, my girlfriend starting to fishtail with my buddy and myself in the bed. At 45mph she couldn't get it under control and over the embankment we went, lauching us into the woods. No serious injuries thank god. you just never know whats going to happen.....

Message: See this web page from the Insurance Institute For Highway Safety (IIHS.org):
http://www.iihs.org/laws/cargoAreas.aspx
It lists state by state if there are any restrictions. Walt, who posted on Mar 21 2003, was wrong. In Virginia, people 16 and over can legally ride in the back of a pickup truck.
