Like the title says, it's a Rolls Royce Merlin, the same used in P-51 Mustangs. 27 Liter, Twin-supercharged V-12.

Here's their page, with many more pics.

If I'm not mistaken, people have been using these same Rolls Royce Merlin engines in boat racing for many many years now.

You need to post the information about the prop that the 51B-51D's used. It plays an extremely important role in the top speed and performance of the aircraft.

K&N Drop in AF (CAI during summer months)

HO Cams & HO Intake

Allison Aircraft built their own version of the RR Merlin late in the WWII conflict and put in in the P 51-D, Max Hp was somewhere around 2,100 hp if I remember right, and it was also installed in the F-82 fighter plane, a siamesed P-51 with 2 fuselages and one cockpit. It was a twin engined job. The first time I saw one at first look I thought it was what they called the "fork tailed devel", a P-36 but it did not have the central cockpit pod, it used the cockpit on one side and removed the cockpit from the other. It had a top speed in level flight of around 580 mph. and was used in the early days of the Korean Conflict.
