Subject: BEST PERFORMANCE MOD? IP: Logged
Message: I HAVE HAD MY 2001 QC 4X4 4.7 FOR 6 MONTHS NOW AND I AM LOOKING FOR ADVICE ON WHAT MOD I SHOULD DO FIRST TO INCREASE PERFORMANCE. I ALREADY PUT IN A K&N FILTER THAT DROPS INTO STOCK AIR BOX. I WOULD LIKE TIPS ON WHICH MOD WOULD MAKE THE BIGGEST DIFFERNCE IN HP OR OFF THE LINE PICKUP. ALSO WOULD ANY OF THESE MODS VOID MY STANDARD WARANTY? ANY ADVISE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED, AS I AM NOT THE MOST ENGINE ORIENTED PERSON AROUND.

Message: If you wanted performance, as in 0-60 or top speed, you should have invested in a sports car. Your Dakota/PU/SUV has the ability to haul, tow, and be utilitarian. Albeit, the Dakota has decent performance... if you're looking to beat Corvettes or top-end Mustangs off the line, you're mistaken.
As for performance upgrades for your DAK, this forum is a good one to be in. There are several of us who have tweaked a few more HP and torque with drop in upgrades.
The most popular ones that are fairly easy are:
Air Intake
Throttle Body
Exhaust
Headers aren't as easy, but your engine has fairly optimal performing headers from the factory.
...Size of your hard drive? It's the flow of your data that counts!

Message: With the right Mod's 2wd Dak's can run with the vet's and stangs, even beat them!! The 2wd reg cab is esencially a sports car with cargo space and will put a lot of them to shame. You can also load them up and go to the beach.
IMHO The black 2WD Dak looks a hell of a lot nicer than a stang and costs less than half a vet. Of course a 4x4 is another story but nothing wrong with getting a little more out of them also.

Message: you can make anything go fast, its just how much money you want to spend. you can make a dakota beat a STOCK vett, but it's not going to be verry streetable and it deffinatly not going to pass smog here in california.
I am a mopar guy and I would LOVE to see a dak beat a vett, but a Z06 runs high 12's stock. thats a lot of mods to a truck to run 12s.
anyway, get the FIPK when it comes out, and for now try a cat back exhaust system, or the new 69mm throttle body (if its out yet) i heard it kicks ass!

Message: I POSTED MY QUESTION ON THE BEST PERFORMANCE MOD WRONG. WHAT I WANT IS ADVICE ON WHICH 1 MOD WOULD YOU ALL RECOMMEND TO GIVE MY DAK A LITTLE MORE GET UP AND GO. I AM AWARE THAT IT WILL NEVER COMPETE WITH SPORTS CARS AND SUCH, AND I AM NOT LOOKING TO DUMP THOUSANDS INTO IT. IT IS AFTER ALL A 4X4. I JUST WOULD LIKE IT TO HAVE A LITTLE PEP. I APPRECIATE ANY RECOMENDATIONS.

Message: My first mod will be a Gibson single 3" Cat back.
This should give about 8 to 12 horses. It appears their cat back is producing the best results.
Cold air intake is also good for around the same but I want the Cat back first for that great sound.
I will probably make my own air intake (The home depot special someone here called it) to save on money and also because I want to super charge later on once I am bored with what it does now.

Message: Mackie,
The Intense Performance is the "Best bang for the buck" and the IAT Adjuster is 2nd in line to that. (Yes, better than the exhaust.)
Wait for the Flometrics TB to be released and use that as the "follow-up" to the first two. You won't be disappointed with it. :)

Message: Konfushus,
I've beat several Mustangs (4.6 & 5.0) with my V6 Dakota...Eric is 100% correct. It's NOT the vehicle, it's how much money you spend on performance "enhancers". I've personally seen several 12-second Dakota's (daily drivers as well) and know of one 9-second Dakota (1995 model) that's also a daily driver.

Message: Definitely go with the exhaust first. Step ONE is to do a free flowing, straight-through muffler from a good, reputable company. Make sure that you are running 2.5" piping if its a V6, and 3 or 3.5" pipes if a V8. Then, step TWO is to install headers by removing the stock exhaust manifolds and running the same sized pipes into your new muffler. Consider removing your stock Catalytic converter if you can. If you cannot, install a good, free flowing aftermarket one and the air will just blow right out of the engine and out your new, larger pipes.
This allows your Dak to breathe really nicely. That would be my recommendation for upgrade #1.

Message: Do not remove the cat (or install a high flow cat) without some decent engine upgrades first. Not only does this give you a loss in bottom end TQ but also will trip a check engine light (MIL) on some 97 models and most 98+ models. (An OBD-II compliant HighFlow cat won't normally trip a code...Car-Sound and Random Technology have already been proven not to do this.)
On the V6, they come factory with 2.5" pipes from the cat on back and the Y-pipe is a 2"-2.25" pipe. More than adequate and a 2.5" Y-pipe (on the V6) showed a loss on bottom end TQ (on the Dyno).
The original post was referring to a 4.7L.
The factory exhaust systems are rather restrictive, but you need to look at the engine modifications from the intake first.
Remember, Air goes in...air goes out. If you change one, you'll need to compensate for the other.
Modified/Cold Air Intake systems will show better gains due to two factors:
(1) Cold air makes more power (it more dense)
(2) The factory intake system is very restrictive to keep the noise levels down.
On the mufflers, one thing to keep in mind is that the old-school theory of "if I can see through it means it better" doesn't apply anymore. Exhaust is based on pulses...not just a simple air flow. Chambered mufflers work very well and, in some cases, better than a straight through since they can redirect the pulses better than a straight through pipe.
Intense Performance: http://www.intenseperformance.com is where you can find the "Z-Tube".

Message: You know I can remember when camaro's and 5.0 fuel injected mustangs made 180 HP or less. I can also remember when everyone got excited that the chev 5.7 with TBI fuel injection was makeing 175 HP in the early 90's. So 235 HP and 295 ftlb of torque from a 4.7 is rather healthy.

Message: No typo Bob. I have seen video clips of V8 2WD Daks running and beating stangs and vets. I think you have underestimated the 4.7 5speed. It runs and beats many Mustangs STOCK!! This truck was designed to be a sports car. You have the 4.7 yourself albeit a C.C 3.55 auto (still quite fast)but I am sure you can imagine that engine directed through a Reg cab 5 speed 3.92

Message: Here is the best performance mod for less than a buck. Locate the IAT or sometimes called the Intake Air Temperature sensor. Remove it and splice a 20 cent resistor in between the 2 wires. You must get the right resistance value out of a manual for your vechile. This change makes your car think that cool air is being sucked into the air intake and therefore pumps more fuel into the pistons giving you a huge performance upgrade!!!
