Subject: Front Rotor Removal IP: Logged
Message: Need Help,
I have a 2000 dakota and tried to remove the front brake rotors. I took the calipers off no problem using a torx 45, but here the problem. I can't get the rotors off. There is a nut at the end of the rotor probably a 34-36 mm bolt that I tried to take off. Does anyone know the correct size? And will these rotors come off when the nut is removed??? I definitly need to turn the rotors and from what I can tell on this website almost every one has problems with the rotors. But I really need to know when that nut is removed will the rotor slide off? Thanks

Message: Dickie,
I haven't done this on my dak, but from what I read, it's not bolted on, rather held on by the wheel, which is over the lugs.
Sounds like you're trying to take the hub off.
I think you just hit the rotor with a blunt object, and it will come off the lug bolts.

Message: Is there two threaded holes on the disc (they will be in the same circle as the stud holes) you should be able to get a bolt to thread into the hole and it will push the rotor off.

Message: I took mine off before. basically take a hammer and tap the area between the studs. the rust will flake off and you should be able to pop off the rotors

Message: my 98 had no holes in the rotor, so i just used a hammer to break it loose. Don't remove the nut in the center. This holds the hub on, and if you remove the nut, you must replace it with a new one(they are one time use only!)which is a dealer part.

Message: Thanks Dakotadude17, I see what you are talking about. Apparently the owners manual is wrong, heaven forbid. My owners manual says to repack wheel bearing every 30000 miles. The guy said you should never unbolt that 34 mm bolt unless you want to replace the whole unit. I was getting ready to gear down hard on that bolt too. Awesome website... Thanks all

Message: hi dickie
as you found out the manual is wrong.
you cannot repack the front wheel bearings on a 2wd dakota. they are a sealed bearing and cannot not be change(you will have to buy need new hub assy). the rotors are held on from the factory by little spring clips that slide over the wheel bolts studs. these are used at the factory to hold the rotors on while the truck comes down the assemby line. also the hub bolt nuts (35mm)
are a one time use only. cost $11.50 each from a dealer. i have replaced both hubs, installed power slot rotors, love the way the truck stops now.
have good day

Message: p.s. forgot to tell you the spring clips are not needed on the wheel bolts studs.
