If we go to war, don't worry, it'll hurt France a lot. They have millions invested in Iraqi oil. And yes, the French, or French companies at least, have sold weapons to Iraq in the past. Ever heard of the Mirage jet? It's a French made fighter plane. Iraq has (had?) a handful along with a bunch of Migs, which are obviously Russian. Also, in 1987, a Perry class frigate (US) was hit by a Exocet missile fired by an Iraqi Mirage. The Exocet missile is a French manufactured air-to-surface anti-ship missile. This was a case of mistaken identity that happened during the Iraq-Iran conflict. So, yes, the French have provided plenty of weapons to Iraq. Also, you may remember that France sold countless nuclear reactor parts to Iraq's Nuclear program in the late 70's, early 80's. The reactor was a few years into development (scientist who have defected have testified that Saddam wanted the reactor so that he could enrich plutonium for a nuclear bomb) when the Israeli Air Force bombed it into oblivion. As you can see, the French and Iraq go wayyy back.

Well judgeing from the replies i see here this isn't going to make me real popular.but here is my 2 cents worth. I spent 23 years in the military(Army Medic) and served in 2 wars(Vietnam and Desert Strom) and a couple of little police actions(Panama and Granada). So with that in Mind I say this ,
The only people who really want this war are those who have never experianced a war up close and personnel. The sad reallity of any war is that alot of people die most of them innocent victims.And in the long run is it really going to change things in Iraq, or make us in the US any safer, When Saddam is gone another will take his place and turn on the US just like all the others have done( IE Saudi Arabia.)And there are still alot of prople who hate Americans (the number will surely increase with our going to war in Iraq).
For those who say we have to disaem Iraq, consider all the other countries around the world with weapons of mass destruction, North Korea,Iran, any of the fromer Soviet Union countries, All of these countries have them and are just as willing to use or sell them to the highest bidder. Are we going to invade them next. Iraqs disarmament should be left to the UN as a whole not to a few.
A better use of our troops and money would be to find the remaining Al Queda group.If 250,000 troops were looking for them ,they would have been caught and executed by now.
As for Bush( and other world leaders), it is easy for him to sit in Washinton and decide the lives of alot of people, because thay won't feel the effects of losing someone they love or have to see the destuction(photo are not the same).
Please don't mistake my opinion as not supporting our troops . I supprot them 100%(I in fact have a son who is in Kuwait with thw 101st right now) And if the Iraq was invading the US I would be the first one to dust off the M16 and fight

That being said,
Most of you anti-France people sound the same as all the anti-Jew, anti-Black, anti-whatever-as-long-as-it's-different-than-you, a$$holes. Nice to know racism (and you could probably make a case for French being a different race) is alive and well in the 21st century.
You're all set to sever whatever alliances we have with France just because they won't help you in your pet war? Geez that's so juvenile.
And don't start that "the French sold arms to Iraq" crap. How many of Saddam's weapons were obtained from America? You gonna start bad mouthing your own country for doing the same thing the French did?
And you want examples? How about Afganistan? Weren't we the ones that put that evil, Taliban, regime in place? So, doesn't that make us accessories to our own attack?
Get a clue people.

France now has an estimated $4 billion in debts owed to it by Iraq as a result of arms sales and infrastructure construction projects. The debt is another reason U.S. officials believe France is opposing military force to oust Saddam.
what do you think....USA oust saddam and the french get scewed out of 4 billion because the sale is in violation to UN resolution after the gulf war. i think i would be agaist anything that would make me lose alot of money let alone $4 billion.
do i think the french should apose a war because of 4 billion, yes! i think everyone here would, even if there was a chance iraq would attack you and kill off 100,000 people. as a government standpoint you just created 100,000 jobs. and there will be plenty of buildings that need to be built. creating a greater economy.
there isnt a government in the world that truely cares about it's people. not usa, not france, not iraq, not any of them. if people die the governments don't care. when was the last time you herd that the president or a leader of a country has a relitive fighting in a war. i know i never have. come on people every country has it's problems....and the biggest problems are the problems of leader of the country....i think everyone in George Bush's family owns something or is involved somehow in the oil industry, so what do you think bush's main focus is going to be. OIL.....
i want saddam out of power because of how he treats his citizens, not because he is a threat to our oil supply. and i personally don't care who helps us out, we don't need help with fighting we just need a place to set up camp and land our jets.

Richard in FL, I disagree that "all countries that have them are just as willing to use them." Mainly because (and I know I don't need to lecture you about this since you were in the military) weapons of mass destruction are a detterent weapon. However, Saddam Hussein has used them in the past during the Iraq-Iran war and on Kurdish villages within his own country. So, this gives him the credibility to use them that no other country can claim (except us). Doing "tests" is one thing, every country that has weapons of mass destruction has tested them in some respect, but only Iraq and the U.S. can actually claim to have used them. And I personally thank you for your military service and your right to disagree.
And to Mr. Wrong-Forum, educate yourself. Comparing a political disagreement to racism is just...stupid, for lack of a better word. Secondly, Iraq may have a few U.S. weapons, some M-16s obtained from who knows where, but you aren't going to find any F-15s in their hands.
And I wonder, do you remember a little thing called the Cold War? The Russians were our enemy then, and they were at war in Afghanistan murdering thousands of Afghan civilians along with a rebel here and there, so who do you think we're going to help? And no, we did not put the Taliban into place, go read a history book. I'm sure if we could have magically predicted the future we wouldn't have done it, but Ms. Cleo wasn't on hand to tell us these things back then. The fact is, we supplied Afghan rebles who we had no idea would turn on us in the future, France has sold weapons to Saddam Hussein, knowing full-well what a nut-case the guy is.
Accessories to our own attack? Last time I checked, they didn't use Stinger missiles to tople the World Trade Center. Also, I don't understand your arguement, the French are allowed to oppose this war for their own economic reasons, and you're allowed to oppose us on this forum for whatever reason you want, but then you tell us not to bad mouth anyone who opposes us? Man, who died and made you king.

Just think if people like Hitler and the germans, or the Japanese. If we just let them go about their ways back in the day, this world would be a vastly different place. Even though saddam doesnt have the capabilities that the above had, his thinking is in the same way. He needs to go...
About the oil thing, we in the US needs to find a way to be self sufficient. Then relying on other countries' oil would be no more.
And the french... America needs to do what is right for America. The french dont change their ways to please the US. So to hell with the french. Let them cry about their 4 billion, if thats what it takes for the US to be safe from saddam and his bullsh!t.
