Message: It depends on the make of the truck. Some have as few as 5, some have up to 18. Most makes now adays have 7 or 9 depending on hp. I drive a freight shaker aka Freightliner and it has a 9 speed transmission.

Message: Any where from 5 to 21. Most company trucks run 9 and 10 with a 3.55 rear end to 4.56 in off road. Some of the super truckers run 13-18 very rare to find the granddady 21. Power comes from Mercedes/freightliner/diamler/dodge:) or cat and detriot. HP from 300 up to 600 and torque from 1200 to 2000. I miss driving. (sometimes)

Message: Got to run an old White single-axle as the company switcher. 12 gears in a 6x2 setup (6 gear tranny and a 2 gear diff - air driven changer to the rear axle).
Most of the time I ran the shorty 21 foot trailers with it, so I left the diff in the higher gear. Even full, that rig could move those trailers easily.
That's about the only thing I missed from workin at RPS. Runnin the switcher.

Message: 5/4 two stick,a 13 two stick(think that old mack was a 13), a spicer 10split,an 8,a 10, and the 18over. depends mostly on what truck is used for, and how intelligent the guy ordering it is, in relation to the type of business he's in.
nothing like burning out a clutch cause someone didnt order deep reduction ,to rattle there cage

Message: Sometimes I wonder if it would have been better if the previous manager had been able to burn out the clutch.
Stupid ID10T forgot to release the trailer brakes and managed to shatter the drive-shaft.
Another one of the workers thought it was fun to slide the rear end, until he wrinkled the cab. Bet he was changing trousers after that.
With everything that rig went through, it's amazing it even ran (of course, you had to fill the air tank with an external compressor before you could start it.)

Message: The 9-speeds I've driven had a pattern like a 5-speed car for the first series of gears:
R 1 3
Lo 2 4
Then you hit the splitter, and leave Lo and Reverse alone (though you can use Lo if you want but it's geared about like 4th or between 3 and 4) for
5 7
6 8
This was in an '85 GMC General with a Cummins "Big Cam" 855 and an Eaton trans. I don't recall the axle ratio but I think it was 3.20-ish.

Message: The "little button" is the clutch brake. That way you can get the gears in the front half of the box to stop spinning so you can put it in gear from nuetral when stopped. Otherwise embarrasing noises come from the transmission. LOL! The larger one that slides is the ranger - just like the 10, 13, 18 and 21 speeds.

Message: Im a Heavy Duty mechanic and work on those all day long. Like its been said trucks will come in many different styles and ratios for the gears. most ive ever seen is 21 on our old HDX Pacific off highway logging trucks with the detroit v12 quad turbo. Thing is crazy 670 HP and 2700 TQ at 2400RPM. Thing is a monster 3.92/4.56 in the rears with lockers
And its a 2 stage transmission and single stage diffs. Think of it as having two transmissions. you drive it like a 6 speed and the 7th is your reverse. Go through 1-6 hit your toggle which then changes it too 7-12 hit your second toggle 13-18 and then your 3 reverse gears
What it does when u hit that toggle is change your transmission output gear (second trans) which then makes a taller or shorter gear giving u better range for the power. And the clutch brake is not a button u push. Your clutch brake is when u push the clutch all the way to the floor. What this does is slows down the transmission input so u can grab gears better. As in semis/off highway they have no syncros just dog gears. (old tech thats proven to stand up better to that type of power and wear)

Message: Its interesting reading all about trucks. I have driven for 30 years and have driven everything from a Mack with a "Quadraplex" that is two shifters, one with 5 gears, the other with 4, you actually come up with 20 gears, but you can only actually use 18. I have also driven Macks with 5, 2 stick6, 9, and 10. I have driven other trucks, Freightliner (currently driving a 2000, centry class w/435 HP Cummins, 13 speed Eaton Road Ranger, 3:58 rear gears twin screw) Peterbuilt, KW, International, Ford, and Marmon.
The earlier engines, use to run at 2100, but many could go well past that, today most are set up to max out at 1800-1900, even though there are still a few that will run 2100 RPM. As far as shifting goes, I shift at 1500, unless I have a heavy load then I will go on up to 1700-1800, but keeping the RPM low will help fuel mileage.
These are just the usual settuing for the big engines, there are a lot of smaller engines out there today and they have different RPM ranges, or maybe close to, or the same as the big engines.
I hope this helps.
Good Luck

Message: When i took my class 1 license test, the instructor would only let me shift at 7000rpms i was trained on a 2005 mack with 13 gears the reason for that is he said most companies do not like people that over rev and waste fuel with the cost of fuel these days i can see why.

Message: flippy, you don't know what you are talking about, or just having fun, I would like to see a big Diesel rev to 7000RPM, of course I would want to be standing back a ways, so I wouldn't get hit with any of the scrapnel flying when it throws a rod out the side of the block. my guess would be it would blow up long before it could reach 7000 RPM, more like 4500-5000.
