had one go roughly 6000rpm when it ran away that thing was scary getting near it to shut off its air supply to slow her down

we weren't making fun of you Flippy, we just wrote our observations of what we read, and you go nuts. I have never seen a diesel engine that was suppose to idle at 1200 RPM either, and shifting at idle???? the only time I could shift at idle would be if the truck was going down hill.

1. Who dragged up this old post! (2003)
2. Idle has a different defenition for a diesel. "high idle" is the speed (RPM) the governer limits a diesel engine to. Most dak owners only know "low idle" - the RPM w/o "stepping on the gas".
3. Joe C. - what do you mean by "split gearbox." There are 9,10,13,18,& 21 speed "road rangers." There are 12 speed progressives. There are the old "brownie boxes" that you shift one tranny then "row" through the other. dakota49 calls this the "Quadraplex." There's the old farm truck 2 speed rear end. Then there's the box with the split in it the let all the oil out! What do you mean?!

Stick Shift, the quadraplex I refered to was in a Mack, a name used by Mack, it was not a Brownie, but a transmission built by Mack. I have driven trucks that did have the Brownie type trans though.
Spicer built trans also, they even had a 11 speed, they also built 9, 10, 12, 16 (4X4 air shift) and an 18, they at one time built a 2 stick 4X4 trans as well. They use to make 2,3,and 4 speed transmissions that could be used with any trans. Today, for off road, and heavy haul, I have seen trucks with 10, 13, and 18 speeds with a 4 speed as well. I think they want to get the super low gears, as well as be able to keep up with highway traffic.

Stick Shift, if you'll get your F-ing head out of your @rse then you would understand that he's talking about a transmission that uses the air to split the gears!!!

1/2 5/6
3/4 7/8

And 9th or 10th would shift automaticaly

Only had to change head gaskets, once, replaced radiator end (plastic) and clutch replaced once. Oh yeah, I have an N-14 Cummins, and Eaton 13 speed

@dakota49

My uncle owns 5 International trucks far form Memphis. I think there 13 speeds (Eaton-Fuller)but has a 15 Litre ISX engine in all the trucks.

Of course you might know by now that International will start makeing there own big bore engine thats over 13 litres. I just wonder how good they will hold up.

What I would like to know, Does Eaton-Fuller make a Automatic tranny?

BTW:You say you got a Freightliner Centry with a Cummins. I bet thats a rare breed. Now you can only get a MB or a Detriot in a F.L

Joe, you are correct, my Freightliner is a 2000 year model, before Freightliner decided to stop offering a Cummins.
Eaton doesn't make an auto trans like the Allison
but they do make a couple of different "Auto Shift" transmissions. Some of the auto shifts still have a clutch pedal, with a control panel to choose gears with, and they have a full auto shift trans, it still has a clutch, but no pedal, its all controled by the computer, and air. I've never drove one before so I don't know just how they work, I have only read about them.

Hey Joe, you mentioned the big bore Internationals. I don't think they can convence to many people in choosing the 13L over some like the 15 ISX

What do you think Dakota49? If you was going to buy a I.N would you try one out?

But if you think about Volvo did the same thing buy buy making a in house engine,Now they have a very decent engine out on the market. But it took them years to do it.

STS, I read about International building a "Big Bore" engine as well, I think I would stick with the Cummins myself. As for Volvo, they have been making their own engines in Europe for a lot of years, in fact in Europe, every truck builder has their own engines and drive trains. I have driven trucks in 4 countries, and 2 continents.
One thing I liked about Mercedes, and Volvo, they use syncronized transmissions, the Mercedes uses a 16 speed, and Volvo, a 12 speed. Mercedes has a 16 liter V8 with 2 turbos and horsepower from 450-600. The Volvo, is an inline 6 and I don't know what the horsepower is on it, but it does pull good. The Mercedes is a good engine, but it can't be imported to the states because it can't meet EPA reg's. That plus the fact it only gets about 3 1/2 miles per gallon. I don't know if the Volvo is the same as the one they use in Europe or not though.
Also, Volvo bought Mack, and they did away with the Mack engine and are using the Volvo engine, they are still using the Mack drive train though, I like the Mack engine and drive train, and I was thinking about buying a used Mack with the Mack engine, and drive train, but with the cost of everything being so high I decided to keep my Freightliner for a little while longer.
Good Luck

Did not the French buy Mack?

Also, Volvo does happen to make a 16 Liter I6 engine with over 600HP and 2100ftlbs toruqe.

You are correct, Renualt did buy Mack several years ago, but sold its share back to Mack then Volvo bought out the whole thing.
I knew Volvo makes a 16L engine but they aren't using that engine in the Mack. The engines they are putting in the Mack are a 700 cubic inch, and an 800 cubic inch, called the MP-7 & MP-8, roughly a 12L and 13L.

shamu, the 13/18 speed transmissions can be shifted just like a 9 speed if you don't need the extra grears. The biggst difference between the 13 and 18 speed is that you CAN split the gears on the low side of the trans on the 18 speed. The 13 speed can only be split on the high side of the trans. I hope that helps.

Post a link to a spec sheet to show your not just a naughty monkey!
The best a VW diesel turns is 5 grand. http//www.cs.rochester.edu/~jag/vw/engine/VWdiesels.html
Maybe you could turn the screw in the governor to wind it tighter and spit its parts all over the road!

BTW-Good posts by Dakota49 on the Trans operation. Splitting the gears on the low end is mainly for off-highway; like logging or low-boy tractors. The high end split gives flexibility for empty or loaded conditions.
